Guest guest
I have gotten about a half dozen empty emails from _catgb2004@..._ (mailto:catgb2004@...) that include the Listen-Up list-serve and _BrooklynneRapert@..._ (mailto:BrooklynneRapert@...) in the reply lines. Is this the email I shouldn't have opened? My security programs have not jumped on any virus, trojan, worm or data miner -- and I have three separate programs running that catch jsut about everything imaginable. Or is a virus on a home computer causing the empty emails? I'm clueless at the moment, my machine says it's clean. Thanks -- Jill

There were repeated ones from the same person, but we periodically get empty emails from people on this list, so I thought nothing of it. And as far as I know, if I don't download something, click on something or open an email with an image, I can't get anything bad. But who knows, perhaps there is a new animal out there. Still, Ewido, SpyDoctor and Norton all say my machine is clean -- and all of those are up-to-date on their signatures.(shrug) Guess I'll just remain confused for now. Guest guest
Gee Jill, I'd love to be able to tell you, but I never opened any of them. I realize that, in most cases, you need to download the attachment to infect a computer. I didn't want to take any chances so I just deleted. I did notice that most of the ones that I got with the title of " New Graphic " came as a two pack. That is to say that I got two emails, same title, same sender. Debbie Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not. Guest guest
Its a virus coming from Yahoo. I am getting it on all my groups. So it isn't coming from you. Sorry for the rant! Barbara Since this little nasty is defined as a worm by Norton, from what I learned, leaving pieces is pretty standard. I had a rather nasty little worm about a year ago and it took quite the process to be rid of it, including deactivating all of my protections (while OFFLINE -- all access turned off or unplugged) and running a cleaner without my automated back-up abilities turned on. It was the only way to kill all the little pieces. If I had not been following the very specific instructions of a techno-geek marvel, I could have damaged my system. UGH! It would hide 2 and activate one. You'd clean one or two each time you ran the scrubber, only to have that last one activate itself the next time you booted your system. Nasty, nasty little devil. I'm running Norton (Ewido and SpyDoctor) and it has not identified this little demon on my system, so I guess there was nothing automatically downloading from reading that email. I'll look for freeware scrubber for this new little devil when I come back online. Best - Jill
Guest guest
Hi Jill - it is this email. Had you not gotten it through Listen-up, it could probably have had an enclosure with a virus or a worm... Guest guest
It seems to be coming through yahoo groups - I've gotten a bunch either through Listen-up or CI Circle. Just trash 'em! Guest guest
Here's more information - it looks like you're only vulnerable if you opened the message within yahoo mail: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/js.yamanner@m.html This write-up includes info on getting rid of it as well. Guest guest
Ok, thanks. Just a little nervous here lately since my hubby's laptop just crashed today. He has Norton Internet security with all the bells and whistles but some pop-up ad broke through it all anyway. He was working on his computer and the annoying ad kept popping up relentlessly, telling him computer was in danger. He of course didn't believe that and tried to close the tiny ad, but one time accidentally clicked on the whole thing (the " x " was soooo small), and VOILA . . . instant crash. Norton told him he had the virus, and he had to buy something online to get rid of it. It quarantined it, but his computer was still out of sorts pretty bad. Some guy is sorting it all out now at a shop. The tech said that more and more creeps are using tiny little popups that pop up near your cursor now instead of the old e-mail attachment method. Be careful out there! > > It seems to be coming through yahoo groups - I've gotten a bunch either > > through Listen-up or CI Circle. Guest guest
Thanks for that info!!! My Norton just said it's detected a threat on my computer. Might be this very mess. Guest guest
It's good to have a pop-up blocker (I love google toolbar - as opposed to google desktop that can be a security problem). I find it helps a bunch. Unfortunately, firewalls can't block out something that you as a user do. It's such a warzone out there! This particular nasty seems to work with yahoo mail - so for example, I read mail signed into my non-yahoo account on Thunderbird so wouldn't be affected. But if you have a yahoo account and open one of those mails, evidently it infects you. It doesn't look like a bad worm to get rid of - but you never know. I tell my users that they can leave pieces and parts of themselves on your computer so it's best to practice prevention at the beginning. Sorry for the rant!
