Guest guest
Is sleep deprived the norm? I would like to know from other members of this site, too. I thought the whole point was to keep them from seizuring, not to induce seizures, and sleep deprivation will do that.... Ours, since the diet, are not sleep deprived. The neuro listed sleep deprived, but I checked with the hospital that initiated the diet and they said " no. " Not sleep deprived. I think finding a good neuro is going to be primary to your daughter's care, and I am so glad you found one. Keep us posted. . mdcherry0917 dmcherry@...> wrote: I just wanted to update everyone. We are doing a sleep deprieved EEG today. Can you beieve this is our first one!?! She had a really hard time last night as I heard her crying cause she was so tired. We also get to meet our new local neuro today (thanks to our wonderful new ped.!). I have my list ready and after we meet him we will decide how we are going to proceed as far as who is going to over see her on the diet. Please pray that this neuro has a heart of gold and really has her best interests at heart! i'm just not ready to give up on the diet yet! Thank you all for allowing me to vent a couple of weeks ago. Guest guest
I think there are a variety of reasons to try for sleep deprived. Usually the EEG techs want to catch the child in an awake state and an asleep state. Much more likely to happen if they are deprived. Also, ironically enough, it's better to catch a seizure on an EEG than not (unless you are shooting for a clean EEG!). It will give you better info as to where the seizures are originating from - and what types of seizure pattern there is...allowing for possibly better treatment or the location of a focal point and therefore allowing the consideration of surgery. Guest guest
Most of Noah's EEGs have been sleep deprived in some form- usually they ask to keep them up an hour or two later before bed and then wake up an hour or two earlier in the morning. Our neuro suggests this for help on an EEG so that they will be sleepier and more likely to fall asleep so they can get a sleep EEG as well as an awake EEG. I know that even WITH sleep deprivation it can be very difficult to get them to go to sleep!! So, the later bedtime and early wake up help with that. Before Noah's diagnosis, our 1st neuro would administer a sedative to help get him to sleep. I don't know how accurate that would have been now that we know the meds affected his seizures. I would think the more natural state is what you'd want for an EEG. I have never had to do an all-night sleep deprivation. I think that is too much for the kid and mommy!! Guest guest
had the sleep deprived kind, pre-keto, as they wanted to record a seizure to see the origin, etc. That was the whole point, to see seizures, I thought. And, you are right, she did go to sleep, so they got the sleep patterns too. Since keto they are looking for a good report, I thought. Already have a baseline for the bad.... I just may be way off on what they are going for??? I am not setting her up for a seizure! Not for their information, or anyone else's! Thanks.. . jsprecourt@...> wrote: Most of Noah's EEGs have been sleep deprived in some form- usually they ask to keep them up an hour or two later before bed and then wake up an hour or two earlier in the morning. Guest guest
I think you are right, Barbara.... but on keto we are going for a clean slate! That is why it seems counterproductive for those of us trying to work this diet to our child's best advantage to do a sleep deprived one???? At the beginning of the diet they get a baseline with all the nasties going on. Hopefully, after a stint on the diet they get nice ones, showing healing. My thoughts, only... I don't know! . Guest guest
Noah's last EEG was a month ago and he was to be sleep deprived 2 hours before bed and then woken up earlier in the morning. He has been seizure-free for 7 months, so we didn't think it would cause a seizure, and he was able to sleep through the EEG... absolutely clean EEG- NORMAL. If your child has been seizure-free for a while, you may not have to worry about it, but if you are newly seizure-free, I can understand!! I also wouldn't want to stay up all night, so you might want to verify with the doctor exactly what he means by sleep-deprived. They may just mean a few hours.
