Brain Collapse???

Jen,

Chances are that her doctor was referring to brain slump, which is a rare,

but serious complication that sometimes happens after decompression surgery.

Sometimes a surgeon removes too much skull, and in essence, over decompresses

the posterior fossa, so the brain slumps down into the foramen magnum. It is

possible that she misunderstood what her doctor was intending to say, in a

way the brain does collapse down, but it is usually referred to as brain

slumping. That's just my guess, take care.

Hey guys, got a question. I recieve a private e-mail from a group

member & her Doctor told her something I thought was pretty crazy, so

I asked my Doctor, he also said it's a quite far fetched notion, but

I wanted to ask all of you if you have heard of such a thing... also,

if you choose to reply to this question please be aware I will be

forwarding them to another member in the group whom originally asked

the question, anyway.... Her Doctor told her that she can't have

decompression surgery because she runs the risk of her brain

collapsing!!! --- Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing,

please let me know.

The brain isn't an organ that collapses like a lung. I wonder what

this doctor thought he was talking about. I'm sure he/she has a real

concern, but obviously didn't actually explain that concern in any

realistic terms. The only things I can think he/she might have meant

would be things to do with sagging tonsils, something with the dura,

or reduced CSF/ICP issues. My suggestion would be to have you freid

ask the doctor to explain what he was talking about.

I believe the term is called " brain slumping " though I am not sure. I have come

across the idea before in my independant research of Chiari via the internet.

I did ask my NS about it before my surgery and asked about the risk and he said

it was a slight risk for me, and it seemed that he implied it was from too much

space bieng added?

I am not sure, any post-op's know what web page might have that?
