well at school requires more than just mastering reading, writing, and

arithmetic. Children need to develop strategies for organization and time

management, and these skills are directly linked to development of critical

thinking. Children can learn strategies for " metacognitive awareness " or an

understanding of their own thought processes and organization skills. This

presentation will highlight how children develop this awareness as one part

of developing " executive functions " . Mannis, Ph.D. is a Learning

Specialist and Executive Director, Ivy Prep Learning Center in New York

City. She has run social groups and teaches individuals how best to manage

their time.

of children with disabilities are often faced with many challenges. Although

these challenges may be intense in nature, little literature, attention and

research has been dedicated to the impact that having a brother or sister

with a disability has on the typical sibling. In this presentation, Mark

Lampert will discuss issues and emotions that are unique to siblings of

children with autism. A hands on approach will be provided to parents and

professionals to assist in eliciting emotional expression, perspective

taking, sibling interaction and networking amongst typical siblings. Mark

Lampert has been a behavior consultant, social skills instructor and sibling

support group facilitator for the Valley program for the past 7 years. He

has been working with children with autism and their families for over 10

years. He is a certified school psychologist and teacher of the handicapped

and is currently concluding his dissertation for his doctorate degree in

psychology.

Panel Discussion to Assist Families with Individual with Special Needs

Speakers: Lieberman & Roy Lippin

This panel discussion is co-sponsored by the JCC Special Services Department

in collaboration with the New Jersey Office of Yachad/National Jewish

Council for Disabilities. Every family needs to be equipped to access the

best available services and programs for their family member with

disabilities. The presenters this evening include Lieberman and Roy

Lippin, both individuals who have, themselves, learned to be the best

self-advocates, as well as additional panel members from statewide advocacy

groups. This evening's workshop will help families learn how to obtain the

needed skills to prepare for their future. Tips will be shared how to best

advocate and promote self¬advocacy, where appropriate. Lieberman is

the former director of government and community affairs for Yachad/the

National Jewish Council for Disabilities and a graduate of Washington

University. is presently a graduate student at The New York University

Wagner School Of Public Service in Nonprofit Management and Public Policy.

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 11 months, has been a long time self

advocate working tirelessly on behalf of those with special needs. Roy

Lippin suffered a tramatic brain injury during his adult years. After his

struggle with rehabilitation to regain his strength and dexterity, Roy has

become a strong self-advocate and sits on several state and national

committees to promote the rights of the disabled

A special life skills oriented program for teens that have mild to moderate

cognitive impairment. Includes academics, vocational training, and placement

in the community one day a week with job coaches. Three-day overnight trip
