Guest guest
My 3 1/2 year old son was also a complete toe walker until about three weeks ago. We went to this speech therapist consultant that is suppose to be (and I think is) really good. She did an evaluation of my son and said that he had some weakness in his trunk, neck, and tongue, a delayed righting reflex, and tissue tightness was keeping his tongue from moving as well. We had already stopped the vitamin E at this time, so I know it is not from this. She told us to do several mouth exercises, some motor planning sounds, physical therapy and Cranio Sacral Therapy. The changes we have seen from Cranio Sacral Therapy are so suprising because going into it I thought it was a bunch of weird crap. First we saw changes in the number of sit-ups (from 0 to 3), he was able to do the wheel barrel, his left ear canal was so small that a q-tip couldn't fit. While it is still small, a q-tip fits. Yes, I know you shouldn't use q-tips but he produces to much wax and I have to put vinigar in his ears to change the PH and I just wipe around the edges. Then he started finally being able to say the motor planning, more sit-ups, and his scribbling started to change to things that made sense when explained and sometimes there is no need for an expaination. I won't continue telling each thing as it happened but after 6 sessions he is no longer a toe walker and not only can he get past neutral when flexing, he has normal flexibility. He used to have fleeting eye contact which we thought was because he was uncomfortable with his articulation, but now he makes and keeps eye contact. He can lick his lips all the way around, do isolated movements with the tip of his tongue, he is rarely 'W' sitting, he can wheel barrel all around the house with his head up, he can do 11 sit-ups in a row and is beginning to put 's' and 'sh' at the beginning of words. He has all sounds at the end of words but this is the 1st new sound at the start since November 2005. What they say is that tissue has a memory and tramaus cause tightness and restrictions in the cerebrospinal fluid. Restrictions can cause any number of sensory, motor, or neurological disabilities. Around the time I was told to try this, someone had written about Kauffman. I went that website and found they have cranio Sacral Therapists. I called and talked to one and she said the best school for it is The Upledger Institute and to contact them. The website is upledger.com. The will help find a provider. Be sure they have taken advanced and SERI and SERII for pediatric. Some teaching is also good apparently. Maybe many of you already know about this since a lot of physical therapist are trained in it. If not, I hope you will look into it. She works on my son while he is playing and it is very light touch. Good luck. __________________________________________________
