Guest guest
, I was wondering if you had found anyone will to explain the Omega 3 with you? I am having the same problem understanding how much to give my 2 yr old. I am using the Coromega and my son loves it with vanilla yogurt but I have a bigger concern about giving him too much Vitamin E. Let me know what you have found out. Guest guest
No, I still don't know what an appropriate dosage is. I guess I can call the DAN nurse who helped us when our daughter was part of a study on B-12. She recommended foods high in Omega 3 and also suggested cod liver oil, but I don't think a dosage was given. I may try to e-mail her next week. I'll let you know what I find out. > > > > I've looked through old messages about Omega 3 but am still confused > > on the dosage. Guest guest
I think the reason you haven't received the info you are looking for is that all kids are different in terms of dosage. My child is very sensitive to the omega's. The Vitamin E has done amazing things to alleviate his sensory issues. But if I introduce just one adult Pro- EFA some mild sensory seeking returns (but I get better eye-contact from him). Some people see no results with the Vitamin E and incredible things happen with the omegas. So unfortunately, this is not an exact science and you really have to just keep trying to find what will work for your child. I just started really slowly with small dosages initially. > > > > > > I've looked through old messages about Omega 3 but am still > confused > > > on the dosage. Guest guest
If you want to be more cautious, you can start with 1 ProEFA per day. Then after a month or so you can double it to 2 ProEFA per day. Then after another month, keep giving that and add 1 ProEPA along with it, per day. You can note any improvements or surges as you add more doses. Maybe you will see a wonderful surge that then levels off, so you increase the dose at that time. Or maybe the progress will just be very, very good and steady, and you will be amazed, either way it happens for you. Many of the parents are starting with 2 ProEFA and 1 ProEPA per day from the very beginning, and they are having good luck with that. As for the vitamin E, as has researched and written many times, 1500 IU of alpha Vitamin E per day is totally safe. Many in this group start with 400 IU Vitamin E and then increase it after whatever length of time they decide on, depending on results seen from it. They will double that amount, to 800 IU Vitamin E alpha (be sure to use the d-alpha and NOT the dl-alpha. dl is synthetic and not absorbed as well.) Also, they add gamma E, usually around 300 mg per day, and some are using more than that, and many are seeing even more benefits when they add the gamma. This can be added right from the start, when you first give the 400 IU Vit E per day, or wait until you decide to double the Vit E to 800 and then start giving gamma E as well. As others have said, this is not an exact science and you need to experiment a bit. Someday this will be an exact science, or very close to it, but it is a matter of doing clinical trials, etc., and for the children that need help now, all that will come years down the road........and our children can't wait for that. But the fish oils are totally safe, as is Vit E up to 1500 IU per day. Many are then doubling the whole thing and giving 2 ProEFA and 1 ProEPA twice a day, and then after a period of time, even giving that same dosage three times a day. It depends on how the child is doing and if there is improvement, and then you definitely want to see even more improvement, so you up the dose. We originally started giving 1 ProEFA to our 2-year-old. Age and weight don't seem to matter. It is a matter of their bodies, their brains, being somehow deprived of these substances, or these substances aren't being metabolized correctly, and these children need these supplements. Their brains are literally starving for them. Please go into the " Visit your Group " and in the search box, type in " Vitamin E " or " Gamma E " or " fish oils " whatever concerns you, and you will see so much stuff from the archives and the various postings. If you can find postings from , she is the one who did so much research on the Vitamin E. It takes some time, but there is an awful lot of information there that explains all this and how it works. Guest guest
Great info Suzanne- I would just add that in some stores ProEFA is now sold under the name " Complete Omega 3-6-9 " . (Nordic Naturals, same exact thing as ProEFA) This does come in a smaller " junior " chewable size too (for just starting out...) , mom to Nate, age 3 > Many of the parents are starting with 2 ProEFA and 1 ProEPA per day from the very beginning, and they are having good luck with that. Guest guest
You're right, . I had forgotten that the ProEFA is now Complete Omega 3-6-9. We purchase our ProEFA and ProEPA through the Cherab Foundation shopinservice online, and they sell the Pro line which is apparently available through health care professionals but not through other retailers. Like you said, it is the same thing. Thanks for clearing that up and saving a lot of confusion. Guest guest
I hope someone else has answered this for you, as these young mothers are so well-informed and write such wonderful posts. In case they haven't, I will just say that I think most of the parents are not giving the CLO since there is the danger of getting too much Vit A. And also, the CLO has high DHA, and what has been recommended to be successful for most of the apraxic children over the years is a product with high EPA and lower DHA. Instead, most are using the Nordic Naturals ProEFA (also this is called Complete Omega 3-6-9, the very same product, just under a different name) and ProEPA, both of which have the recommended formula, high EPA to DHA, and also including GLA, which was also determined in an earlier trial to be necessary in the formula. (The Pro- names of the Nordic Naturals brand are the professional line available to health care professionals. This is what we happen to buy, and we get both products through the Cherab Shop in Service. www.shop-in-service.com They've been running a special on this site that is a very good price, if you are interested. Also, Coromega is not the formula recommended, but some people are using it and are happy with it. People using the ProEFA (Complete Omega 3-6-9) , which is lemon-flavored, pierce the capsules and drain the oil to a spoon if the child will take it that way--our little guy calls it lemonade. Others prefer to mix it in with some foods, such a yogurt, orange juice...... They start with one capsule per day and maybe after a month or so add another capsule, thereby giving 2 per day, probably both at the same time, and with food. Another month or so and they add 1 Pro-EPA and give a total of three capsules, once a day. Some prefer to give the three capsules immediately, right from the beginning. We started slower. Then when there has been a surge or even just really good steady progress and you want more results, then they double and give it twice a day, yes 6 capsules in all--2 ProEFA and 1 ProEPA two times a day, either all at once or at different times, with food. Many then later triple the dosage. Suzanne [ ] omega 3 dosage I've looked through old messages about Omega 3 but am still confused on the dosage. I had thought about ordering Coromega but my husband bought plain old Cod Liver Oil and our daughter will drink milk with it added to it! I can't stand to be in the house when he fixes her the drink so I told him he'll have to give it to her when I'm at work. I can't believe she'll drink something so disgusting when she is such a picky eater! Anyway, I need to know what an appropriate dose would be for her so I can tell my husband how much Cod Liver oil to put in her milk. She's 4 1/2 yrs old and weighs around 35 or 36 pounds.
