Bet I'd know it!

We live in Hanover New Hampshire which is on the Vermont/NH border. Tom

is 13.999 and just finished 7th grade; Sam is 11 and just finished 5th.

I have two middle schoolers now!

I am mostly a lurker- but am from Central Illinois. My youngest,

Ellyssa, age 8, has moderate bilateral loss and wears aids. She attends the

local parochial school, we pay for additional speak/langugae therapy 2x

week outside of school, and she does pretty dog-on well! The other three

kids are hearing with excellent selective listening skills! is 18 and

leaves for college in just 7 weeks..... is 14 and can hear but doesn't

listen (her attitude gets in the way!) and Mac is 10 and can only hear

sports events or sports stats- never instructions on cleaning his room or

taking out the garbage!

Yes, the older three complain about their HOH sister and sometimes get

very, very frustrated by issues hearing loss brings. I am not sure, though,

if it is different than OTHER frustrations they have about her as the

" littlest " in the family and I figure it would always be something. My

oldest did grieve when her baby sister was diagnosed. Lyssa was diagnosed

at age 5 after many years of struggling and language problems. lost a

dearly loved vocal teacher who died in childbirth, a friend was killed in a

tragic teen driving accident and Lyssa was diagnosed all in the same week.

was VERY angry at God and it has taken a long time for her to work

things out. was very overprotective for a while, and Mac has ALWAYS

been his baby sister's interpreter and protector. Now, however, hearing

loss is just part of life- sometimes Lyssa does really silly things or

misinterprets in really funny ways when she doesn't have her ears in, we

joke about the neighbors listening to the TV unless Lyssa puts her ears in,

etc......and its okay. The 4 kids are always fighting over something- but

God forbid an " outsider " say something about any of them- the claws come

out and they will defend one another to the death! Guess that's pretty normal!

BTW- Lyssa leaves for Lion's Camp today......she's excited and I am sad. It

will be awfully quiet around here with one missing. HOW am I going to

handle one going off for college?

Sorry to be slow, we just drove back from AG Bell (11 hours - ugh! We did stop

for meals though)

Terri , Mom to Kathy, 11, bilateral CI

Natick, MA

(Mile 10 on the Boston Marathon)

We started this journey in San Diego CA - Kathy had 2 high power hearing aids

then moved just north of Austin TX - Kathy got her first CI at 7 1/2

Now almost 4 years in Natick MA - Kathy got her second CI at 11 (almost 12 now)

It has been interesting to see how different states deal with DHH. Every place

has had advantages and disadvantages.
