Guest guest
One of my friends' mom has type II diabetes. Her blood glucose has been very high lately even with meds (insulin shots). I mentioned to my friend that low carb could help, and now her mom is interested. I'm going to call her tomorrow. I know some of you guys have type II diabetes, so I'm hoping you can help me be prepared. Is there anything different about doing this if all you're worried about is blood glucose? (Although she IS overweight but that's not what's bothering her now). Does anyone have good sites I could check out for her? (She doesn't have a computer - but her daughers do). I know that Bernstein (sp?)'s book is more about this than Atkins. But I'm not sure it's been translated into hebrew, plus - I think someone said that Bernstein is *too* strict, that they (the person who said it, and is a type II diabetic) can have more (carbs?) than what Bernstein said. Does anyone think Atkins would be enough? If Bernstein has been translated, is it very important that she read THAT? And another question - about type I diabetes, not II - does anyone know if a lc wol helps this too? I mean, it probably does - but does it actually lower the level of insulin needed? One of my best friends has type I diabetes, and has already lost one of her eyes. Thanks! Vered
Guest guest
Vered, I am a type II diabetic. I tried the diabetic diet and gained about 35 to 45 pounds, and when they started talking about having insulin shots... well, that was the reason I went on Atkins. Whithin the first two weeks my sugars dropped down to the high end of normal, and after about 4 weeks have never been high again (with the exceotion of right after I had a cortisone shot) The weight loss has been a FANTASTIC sid effect:) --- " Vered Mourad, DVM " vered2@...> wrote: > One of my friends' mom has type II diabetes. Guest guest
Vered, I think that Atkins will be good enough to help your friend's mom. I think the book by Bernstein is recommended for diabetics because his plan is for diabetics not weight loss, and maybe he explains why it is so good for diabetes better. Though it seems like Atkins works just as well for diabetics. I can't speak from personal experience though. Where is Meanie when you need her, anyway? I also think Atkins can help type 1 diabetics somewhat, but not as much as type II, though again, that is just from things I have heard on the list.
