Guest guest
Hi Leanne, No, ketocal is not the MCT milkshake. If you are going on the MCT version of the diet then it is more than likely you will be using SHS products i.e. liquigen (there is strawberry flavour liquigen available very soon too - which is nicer to drink if that is the way your child is going to take the MCT oil). There is also the MCT module oil that is made by SHS as well that you might be prescribed. Ketocal is a 4:1 ratio powder that can be made up into a shake and either given as a sip feed or given to tube fed children. I use it as my emergency milkshake in case does not want to eat anything. If you are about to start the diet, you might like to pop into www.matthewsfriends.org as well - this is an organisation I have set up in the UK to promote the diet and raise awareness of its benefits as a treatment for epilepsy. The website is there for support to parents and there are some recipes for the MCT and classical versions of the diet together with photographs, so you can actually see what some of the food look likes. There are some hints etc on helping you get started too. We are only a couple of months old at the moment and there is a lot more to come on site (a lot more recipes too)- hopefully when you have got to grips with things you can post some of your recipes up too!!! If there is anything that s Friends can do to support you when you start, then don't hesitate to contact us. This site is a wonderful source of support too - the guys here have just seen me through a really bad patch and the knowledge on here is unbelievable. Good luck when you start and don't forget to shout if we can help you in any way. Guest guest
Hi emma, thanks for your email,im really not up to all these different oils and stuff. is going into Hospital on Monday morning to be starved for 24 hours prior to commencing on the diet,I am dreading it in some ways but in another i am so glad that the consultants are finally coming round to our way of thinking, and putting her on the ketogenic diet at last.we have been asking them for 3 years to try it but they kept putting her on drug after drug which didnt work. She is going on the mct version of it and will be having a sort of milkshake drink 4 times a day.She will get 60% of her calorific value from this milkshake and 40% from actual food.I am quite concerned about all the stomach problems that these children can develop after being on this diet for just a couple of days and i think this is why she is being kept in for 4/5 days.Got to go now as shes fitting again, hubby is with her,but will hopefully speak to you again. thanks,Leeanne. Guest guest
We're on the same version - just a couple of hints.... (4.5 then) started on this in Nov, things went fairly well in hosp but we had probs with the runs / vomitting. We dropped the MCT oil right back and increased it very gradually. When we went away at Christmas we were still having problems with the runs. As we were in a farmhouse with its own water supply we took bottled water and strangely enough had no probs at all on holiday. When we got back the runs returned, even though we were using boiled tap water - we went back to bottled & all was OK again - found Lidl water more effective than Asda / Tesco's no idea why but if it works....! Also Lidl powdered milk was better than Marvel etc. which had a crumb-y texture and didn't mix so well into milkshakes. 's not had a fit whilst awake this year, which is pretty remarkable. Good luck with starting the diet - the MCT version is easier to manage than the classic, but it's still piggin' hard work!!
