Guest guest
You know, I went into motherhood thinking TV is evil and convinced I would keep my child far away, but I have to admit it has had its benefits. When I see my 2 yr old imitating the signs and trying to say the words while watching " Signing Times " or dancing like a maniac (and unfortunately with his father's sense of rhythm) when a Laurie Berkner music video comes on, or lighting up with a big smile when he sees a Dora doll (and giving her a kiss) because he finally knows who the heck Dora is, I think, well this doesn't seem so evil after all! Human interaction is better and playing with actual toys in the 3-dimensional world is too, but realistically we can't stimulate our children one-on- one every minute. Sometimes you gotta make dinner. For me, the keys are quality of TV, moderation and balance, and NO commercials!!!
Guest guest
Hi, I found that having my daughter watch DVDs from BabybumbleBee kids was extremely helpful. The " Action Words Volume 2 " got her saying the word " fly " right away. (See http://www.babybumblebee.com/) She has also responded well to the Sesame Street Beginnings series especially - Make Music Together http://www.sesameworkshop.org/sesamebeginnings/new/ This gave her context for some of the things we were trying to tell her. > > I believe it certainly is, but doesn't a non-verbal toddler benefit > more from interactions rather than watching TV? Any comment? > Jean >

Guest guest
Hi - My son also does VERY well with the baby bumble bee videos. He also LOVES the Baby Babble video. I think the Baby Babble video had him talking even more - I wish they had more Baby Babble videos. These videos have been a HUGE success in getting him to talk. - > > > > I believe it certainly is, but doesn't a non-verbal toddler > benefit > > more from interactions rather than watching TV? Guest guest
Hi For my ds the Signing Times videos (recommended so many times over on this list) have been a MIRACLE!!! I am not exagerating when I say that nearly all his current limited language skills (about 24mo & he is 3) have come from those videos. For whatever reason (I think receptive language disorder) my ds needs the visual and physical input to learn words. He is still working very hard on initiating language and pronunciating but he has easily learned 60+ words from those videos alone! We can do ST type work (repetition, repetition, repetition as the ST loves to say) till the cows come home and make no progress but one afternoon of Signing times and WOW he ads 10 more words! Also, because they are helping speech they also do so much for his self-esteem! He loves to watch the videos in the morning as he eats breakfast and go through all the signs, soaking up the praise he gets from us with each sign. It also seems to get his brain " on track " for school. So for us it is a resounding YES! The TV (but not cable, we don't even have it) has been more one of the most helpful of all learning tools!!!!! Martha
