Guest guest
Hi On the news tonight there was a report that linked the consumption of vegetable oils to increased incidence of macular degeneration. The advice was to avoid eating any vegetable oils or products that contain them. I am really concerned about this because Claire has over 150mg of sunflower and canola every day as part of her diet because she has a dairy allergy and can't take cream! I wonder whether anyone has received advice on this via their Keto team? I would be grateful to hear any updates on this! Claire has been seizure free and has made such a lot of progress since getting rid of the Lamictal and would hate to have to abandon the diet because of this. Many thanks Jill
Guest guest
I hadn't heard that connection before, but may watch out for that now. I have heard that partially hydrogenated oils are supposed to be bad for us. Anyway, I'm replying because our son also has a dairy allergy, (he's allergic to milk protein or casein and breaks out in a rash) and we have actually been able to slowly introduce heavy cream and butter to his diet due to the fact that those are high fat and little protein-type dairy products. He broke out slightly at first but hasn't had much trouble since then. He's also 3, so maybe he's growing out of the allergy. We also use mostly olive oil, since that has always been known to be a good oil, and have tried safflower, as well. Flax seed oil is good for us, but can be hard to incorporate as it's not good to cook with and doesn't taste good, so it can only be added to flavorful food. I hope this helps some. vegetable oils, macular degeneration & keto diet Hi On the news tonight there was a report that linked the consumption of vegetable oils to increased incidence of macular degeneration. Guest guest
Hmm, if it's not one thing...... Yes, it is a worry hearing things like that, but I'm a bit of a 'blank it out and hope it will go away or never happen' type when it comes to anything like this Jill. Possibly a bit foolhardy I know, but I guess I prefer to stick with the devil I do know, ie - the one that is helping to control 's seizures. To change his oils and fat content right now (he is on mainly canola oil) would be like contemplating changing his meds, and it just isn't somewhere I want to go right now. I will try and remember to bring it up with our dietician when she returns though and ask her opinion, but my feeling is she will probably be a bit like me - stick with what is working for now if possible. So Claire is doing well again? I know you guys had those hiccups for quite some time, so nice to see this Did you see that 's carnitine has dropped back down again? Can't remember if I have posted his results or not, but I remember I was going let to you know....... Total was 16 (21-70), free was 7 (13-56). So a TC-FC/FC ratio of 1.28. When the aim is .4 or lower, he is obviously looking to be deficient again, but like the oils, ph swings etc etc, I'm filing it for now into the 'ignore and hope he is ok' pile...After the previous supplementation attempts, I don't think I really have much choice in the matter ----- Original Message ----- > Hi > On the news tonight there was a report that linked the consumption of > vegetable oils to increased incidence of macular degeneration.
