Reading: The Last Civil Right

Sally Grimes on the State of Reading Instruction

For 35 years the work of Sally Grimes has revolved around children and

adults who have struggled in life with something that is learned with

relative ease by most others -- learning to read. In her article, " Reading:

The Last Civil Right " , Sally relates her frustration about the massive

reading failure of our nation's school children in the face of reliable

evidence on what works in reading instruction. Read it here.

In November, Sally conducted a two-part Advocate Academy Webinar on

" Understanding Reading Instruction and Remediation " . Knowing the five

essential components of reading instruction and how to remediate weaknesses

in each is critical to effective advocacy for struggling readers.

The archive of " Understanding Reading Instruction and Remediation " is now

available for purchase.

Advocacy in Action

Bridging Research and Practice in Special Education Advocacy

Advocacy in Action is designed to bring you key findings from important

research in special education. We boil it down to the essential information

and tell you why it matters. Two important Advocacy in Action reports are

now available:

Report on a study of the Procedural Safeguards Notices of 49 states and the

District of Columbia. Learn what researchers consider to be important

features that make this legal notice more parent-friendly. Then see how each

state fared using our grading system.

Report on a study of 800 due process, district court and appellate court

decisions involving the adequacy of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). The

findings provide important information that advocates and parents need to

take into consideration as they work together to plan effective behavioral

interventions on behalf of students with disabilities.

Breaking the Barriers

Users of Augmentative Communication Speak Out

The Advocacy Institute teamed up with TASH to present a briefing for House

Members and their staff on September 21, 2006 on the use of augmentative

communication.

Advocates Larry Bissonnette, Burke, Tyler Fihe, Thresher, and

Project Co-Director Christi Hendrickson used a combination of video clips,

augmentative communication devices and power point presentations to lobby

for public policies and funding that support the right of individuals with

disabilities who cannot speak to access a full range of alternative and

augmentative communication options.
