" THE REAL DEAL ON TURNING KIDS AROUND "

This is a powerful program that helps kids avoid destructive decisions such as

drug and alcohol abuse and truancy. His

presentation provides a profound, inspiring and clear message about what one

human being can accomplish. This

dynamic speaker will impress the audience with insightful, provocative and

energizing ideas for helping children in need.

You may laugh and you may cry, but your life will never be the same after

hearing this talk. Tangible skills are presented

in a practical and useful way for all.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS

Session A

G. Katz, MAT, Past-President: NJ International Dyslexia Association

Dr. Marilyn Gonyo, Professor (Rtd.), Director of Special Education Graduate

Programs, Georgian Court University

" READING: AN OVERVIEW: FROM PHONEMIC AWARENESS TO FLUENCY TO COMPREHENSION "

Reading, being the crux of all learning, serves as the most fundamental factor

in the individual's ability to learn.

Inevitably, problems with reading interfere with a student's success in

school.

" Phonemic Awareness to Fluency "

This presentation will introduce the participant to the Orton-Gillingham

approach, with the emphasis on phonemic

awareness, leading to the development of fluency as the bridge to reading

comprehension.

and

" Comprehension "

Within the components of reading, comprehension represents the major goal, for

without understanding, learning does

not occur. This workshop will review the levels and types of comprehension and

present strategies to develop

comprehension skills in a variety of reading genre. Techniques to accommodate

learners of different ages will be

presented via activities and simulations. Emphasis will be on strategies to

help students gain meaning of printed

material ranging from singular words to comprehending connected discourse.

Session B

Ron Glodoski, Motivational Speaker/Author

" MOTIVATING UNMOTIVATED STUDENTS "

Through this compelling presentation, attendees will be provided with

strategies to:

*Recognize individual learning styles.

* Understand the effect learning styles have on how we perceive and interact

with our environment

* Discover personal communication styles, and demonstrate practical ways to

modify our verbal and non-verbal

communications to promote optimal rapport with students.

*Gain 10 practical steps on working with kids at-risk

*Learn the 5 facets of student motivation.

Session C

Janet M. Krebs, CCC-SLP, Communication Therapy Center

" KIDS TALK: BUILDING SOCIAL PRAGMATIC LANGUAGE IN SMALL GROUPS "

Many children are able to learn language structures by role imitation. They

can usually learn carryover in rehearsed

situations. However, many children use little variation and flexibility to

adapt their responses to the inevitable changes

that occur in an unpredictable environment. Use of small group settings has

enabled the teaching of flexibility of

response, both verbal and visual. As a result of participation in these

groups, children learn to share information with

others, use of language for discussion and problem-solving, alternative way to

respond in a situation, appropriate social

greetings and ways to address people, ways to gain attention, use of

reciprocal language, body-space parameters and

verbalization during pretend play.

Session D

Jerry Tannenbaum, Attorney-at Law

Partner, Schnader, on, Segal and , LLP.

" STUDENT-ON-STUDENT BULLYING & HARASSMENT:

ITS RELATION TO CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS "

One in ten children is bullied regularly. Every month 250,000 children report

that other kids physically assault them.

Of course, many do not report this. One in four children identified as young

bullies will have criminal records by age

30. 160,000 students miss school every day because they feel intimidated by

their peers.

Our speaker has practiced in the areas of general civil litigation, with an

emphasis on employment discrimination and

education law.

This session will address legal rights and issues involved, and include basics

in Effective Planning, Free and Appropriate

Education, student discipline, and school-related bullying and harassment.

This session will be of interest to educators

and parents.
