My son is globally delayed. He just turned 4 and to my surprise and

delight.. he is 80% potty trained. We got over the " hump " during

the Christmas Holiday Break.

Here are some suggestions:

Make sure you have the little potty, maybe more than one if you have

several bathrooms.

If you hear the grunts of a poop, put him on the potty. (I started

this at 2.5)

At 3 ish - we only used pull ups and I insisted that he pull them up

and take them down.

Soon after, I started the early morning ruitine of putting him on

the potty as we did. That soon became successful, but at first you

need to be patient. He didn't seem to " get it " that he had control.

At 3.5 I took his pants off (it was summer) and put the potty in

front of the tv. and soon enough he would get to the potty and do

his business.

Unfortunately, I started to see misses so I took the potty chair

back to the bathroom and quit for awhile.

I continued to ask him if he has to make a pee, to which he mostly

said no.

Then he got sick (Christmas), so it was pull ups all day/time for a

week. After that was done I took the pull ups away and put him in

big boy pants all day all the time and vowed not to leave the house

for a few days.

First day... horrible, up to 10 accidents in the big boy pants. I

spoke sternly and clearly " no pee pee in the pants " and asked him

every 15 minutes if he had to pee.

He started to say " yes " !

Within a few days, it was all pee pee, all the time in the potty.

It was like a switch went off in his head... Hey! I can control this

thing.

So now it's getting on the big potty or standing up, getting him to

get himself to the potty on time, and getting him to successfully

pull his pants up and down by himself.

So I call that 80%.

It seems that once he got the idea that he has control AND he

clearly recognized an accident, the switch went on.

I think the pull ups and diapers are almost TOO GOOD. They wick

away the wetness, thereby also taking away the feeling of wetness.

Hope that helps. I thaught it would never happen...
