Guest guest
Hey Rhonda - sounds like we are doing the same kinds of things. I started out with 3 pounders in August, then at the start of every month I go up to the next set of dumbbells at the gym. So just this Monday I started using the 10 pounds - 3-5-8-10. I know it sounds wimpy to take that long to work up to 10 pound weights - but I am SO PROUD of myself for doing it this slowly. Usually I'm the gal that refuses to listen to good advice & I go off and do too much and end up injuring myself, and then quit the program all together. This time has been different - I am slowly but surely getting better and better every day. Of course the weight is coming off S L O W L Y too, but I just keep telling myself - slow & steady wins this race! But I did force myself to finish reading the chapter that I was on in the Dr. Phil book this morning - I read it while on the Treadmill. And I'm going to try to incorporate some of those ideas into my daily life - I'm on the section talking about trying to replace bad habits with good ones. Like maybe mopping my kitchen floor instead of sitting on my butt during the boys' nap and watching TV & eating for the entire 2 hours! Well - I'd like to chat more, but I have a hungry boy next to me demanding for me to get up and make him a cheese sandwich - (it's noon here in Idaho) I'll talk more later! Sherlyn http://community.webshots.com/user/spudberry Increase in weight amount I upped the weight amount I have been using and boy let me tell ya I can feel it in my chest this week. The hubby showed me a few things to do and told me to start out with low weight since I have never done this and never really used those muscles in my chest. So after a few weeks of very low weight and not really feeling it I decided to up it by 2 pounds. Hopefully I will now start to see some results since I am taking the muscls to fatigue. Anyone have any idea how long it takes to build muscle. I guess I am thinking they say it is safe to loose 2 pounds a week so you can kind guess how your weight loss will go. Is there any time tables on muscle?? Rhonda
Guest guest
I know what you mean about feeling like you are going slow and such with the weights. I feel like such a wimp when the hubby comes home and works out and adds a bunch more weight to the bars than I was using. But honestly I am feeling it the next day not to the point of pain but I can feel that I did something and as long as my muscles think it's enough weight who cares about the numbers. If I were to add anymore weight I would have to take alot longer to recover and thus less working out and an added risk to injury. I am going to start jotting down how much weight I amusing and when I add weight so that in a year or 6 months I can look back and see the difference. Guest guest
I've been told it's different for everyperson. doing the BFL training in 6 weeks I lost 3 pounds of body fat and gained 3 pounds of muslce. It put my body fat percent down by 2%. I'll find out in another 6 weeks how my 12 week fit and firm challenge went. > I upped the weight amount I have been using and boy let me tell ya I > can feel it in my chest this week. Guest guest
don't ever compare the weight your hubby lifts to what you lift! It's apples and oranges! LOL For that matter, don't compare to anyone standing next to you or whatever because you have no idea how long they've been at it or what their training has consisted of. I've weight trained for years. I still push myself to muscle fatigue. Let's see on biceps the most I go up to is 20 pounds but that's only for 6 reps. I believe I probably started at 8 pounds. The key is you are feeling it and are conscious of making sure you keep feeling it. I am positive you will get great results. > > Hey Rhonda - sounds like we are doing the same kinds of things. Guest guest
Oh I don't want to lift as much as the hubby. I know I can't and never will. I am ok with this taking awhile. You mentioned 8 pounds to start out with. I was using 5 pounds and this week increased to 10 on the bicep bar and bench press bars. The tricep bar I kept at 5. I don't think that muscle is ready for an increase. I am thinking of trying new exercises for that muscle. Possibly putting two tricep exercises into one workout since that seems to be the muscle in my upper that is lagging behind. It is rough doubling it like that but since I am using the free weights and i only have 2.5 and 5 pound weights as my lowest to work with I just lowered the reps from 15 to 10. Guest guest
You want a great tricep exercise? Lie on a bench on your back and hold one dumbell with both hands and dip back toward the floor and up again. It works so well because it isolates and gravity pulls it down too. It blew my triceps the first time! LOL and Hubby's. The tricep is a really hard muscle to train for a woman. Right now I'm doing a lot of back work in my work out cuz I still have some annoying flab there. GRRRRRR Have you thought about using elastics for some exercises? They really have great resistence and are cheap! 204/171/165 then re-assess > > > > Hey Rhonda - sounds like we are doing the same kinds of > things. > > I > > > started > > > > out with 3 pounders in August, then at the start of every > month I > > > go up to > > > > the next set of dumbbells at the gym. Guest guest
That does sound like a good one. Hmm only prob is my bench is up against the wall and the other end has one of the legs press things. I have been meaning to get the hubby to move it to a different spot so maybe I can leave it off the wall a bit. You know I just said next time I am at Dick's or MC Sports I was gonna get some of the elastic resist bands. Thanks for the info!!! Guest guest
If you have an exercise ball you can do it on the ball and get a double whammy on your abs because you'll be stabilizing yourself. You can buy the big thick elastics at a stationary store for like $2 a box and just tie a few together. Works like a charm! > > > > > > Hey Rhonda - sounds like we are doing the same kinds of > > > things. > > > > I > > > > > started > > > > > > out with 3 pounders in August, then at the start of every > > > month I > > > > > go up to > > > > > > the next set of dumbbells at the gym. Guest guest
That's too odd I was just looking at the videos for the balls on Collage Video last night. I think it might be a good buy for me if it is as effective for the abs as people say it is. I was also reading that with the ball to sit on it while your watching tv and your core will have to balance you while you sit there. An ab workout while you watch tv with no crunches...I am sold!!! lol Thanks ! Guest guest
> I upped the weight amount I have been using and boy let me tell ya I > can feel it in my chest this week. ***********I just upped all of my weights this week too. I upped them five pounds since that's what the little plate is, because I didn't want to go to the next level too soon. It feels wonderful. Hopefully I will now start to see some results ##########you sure will. I started seeing results of my weight lifting once I upped it the first time after one week. I love my shoulders and back again, and my arms are really really toning in the tricep area (which i always hated and am starting to like) I also do the crunches , obliques, and reverse curls on the stability ball and am really noticing the differences there also. > since I am taking the muscls to fatigue. Guest guest
that is a great idea. they do this at the gym on the charts too so you can see how much you've advanced. it's great motivation. i couldn't do like my hubby either because i want to be able to lift the weights every other day and not have a long recovery time so that i skip it get bored and lose the program all together. just remember you're doing good for you and doing a great job. > > Hey Rhonda - sounds like we are doing the same kinds of things. Guest guest
I have always hated my arms too. They just seem to big and no shape. So I am looking forward to the changes I am going to see with the weights. It is kinda unreal..I upped the weights on Monday and have used the 2 more times this week. Today I could feel that I was not struggling nearly as much as I was on monday. Not that I am ready for an icrease again lol. But it was nice to feel a little stronger. Instead of increasing weight over the next feww weeks maybe I will just increase the reps by a few. I only did 10 this week maybe next week I will up it to 12 and see how that goes.
