Guest guest
FYI - our pediatrician told me that between 2 and 4 yrs of age is normal for potty training for ALL children, so let's not feel too bad if our little ones who may also have some SI issues, low tone, and communication problems aren't potty trained right away. I know I am already nervous because my son will need to be potty trained for the 3 yr old class next fall, and my mother hounds me about potty training everytime she sees me (ugh), but really our kids are within normal range (and even if a bit outside the normal range, not surprising considering the challenges they face). Guest guest
Hi, My daughter (still not potty trained) used to scream when we put her on the potty. It's called positional insecurity. We got her a potty ring with handles and put a foot stool under her feet. It has made her comfortable enough not to be afraid to sit on the potty. She's just not ready. > > > > My son will soon go into what's called " The Teddy Program " for his > > speach delay.. Anyways.. Guest guest
Just for insight... Yes, it is normal for children in the US to potty train between age 2 and age 4. Average age for daytime dryness for a girl is 3 and a boy is 3.5. Night time dryness comes later. When folks like our mothers, grandmothers etc hound us about it, here's why.... There is an interesting article (it was published in Contemporary Pediatrics about 2 years ago) by a physician named Basil Zitelli. In it he compares how the age for potty training increases as diapering products improve. In the 1920's when the only option was non-disposable diapers the average age for being potty training was 18 months. As disposable diapers came on the market place the average age went up to 2 and then 2.5. Now we have disposables that are comfortable for kids, we even have pull ups so that kids can wear diapers even longer. Kids no longer complain as soon as they're wet, etc.... so now they potty train at age 3 to 3.5. Zitelli's point was that as the more inconvenient the job of diapering was, the younger children were when potty trained. So.... when our grandmothers were raising kids, kids were potty trained by 18 to 24 months. Our mothers probably potty trained us around age 2 to 2.5. This is why, no matter what we say about today's " average age " of potty training, to them it is nothing but hogwash. Potty training is one of those " generation gap " issues. That said, I too am in the middle of potty training hell. The child loves to sit on the potty. Loves to talk about the potty. Loves the Once Upon a Potty book but she insists on going in her pants and THEN telling me she needs to sit on the potty. I know some of this is being 2 (almost 3) and some is motor planning. However, at this point I will buy her a sports car if she will just PEE IN THE POTTY!!!!!!! Guest guest
Here is an idea- have him/her clean up the mess. (When it's not extremely messy) I did this when my daughter was deliberately pee'ing on rug. At first I thought the dog was. Until I caught her in the act- sitting on the floor, pants down. I walked in, she stood up so fast to pull up her pants. When she did, I then noticed the wet spot. We had a behavioralist comming to our house to help with negative behaviors of aggression, then the peeing on the rug came into play. She (the behaviorist) suggested to have our daughter clean it up. (hand over hand in the beginning) After having to do this, with our firm words of " No, you go in the potty " This behavior ended. Hope that helps someone.
