Guest guest
you sound like you're at your wits end and i think we've all been there at one time or another. i don't know your son but just from your post it sounds as if he could possibly have sensory processing disorder. kids with apraxia often have SPD also, like my son. please check out this other group (sensoryintegration) and try reading " the out of sync child " and see if you see your son in those symptoms. it may be that he is just overly responsive to some stimuli and that the world is a buzzing whirling overwhelming blur to him. for the sake of your sanity and a peaceful childhood for your son, check it out. good luck to you! > > My son will soon go into what's called " The Teddy Program " for his > speach delay.. Guest guest
Just try to keep in mind that he is still just a child...and if he has sensory issues, a simple thing may be very upsetting or frightening to him. If he has a speech delay, than he has some challenges that may frusterate him more than other children. Hang in there and try to look past the tantrums By the way...lots of boys (speech delayed or not) have the same challenges with potty training and the event happening in the diaper after waiting at the potty. Try not to worry about it! Good luck! [ ] HELP My 3 Y/O driving me nuts My son will soon go into what's called " The Teddy Program " for his speach delay.. Anyways.. Guest guest
Hi, I can really empathize with you. Are there some things that set him off worse? Does he " feed on " a busy, noisy house? Will he settle down if you remove those stimuli, like the TV or radio? Does a quiet voice and room settle him? What about toys, and diversions? Likes and dislikes? Sorry so many questions, but I want to see if there is a comparison with my 3 yr. old son. As far as potty training- is he a young 3 yr. old? My son is potty trained during the day, but still wears a diaper at night, He was extremely resistant to potty training. Didn't care a bit about wearing a dirty diaper. I believe it was a control issue with him. ( And he is a strong willed boy.) But I am strong willed, too. It got to the point where training pants were nothing more than a diaper. He couldn't see a difference, and frankly they're made out of the same stuff so I could see where he'd think " no big deal wearin' these! " <<VBG< At the beginning of preschool, I had a talk with one of his teachers about all the potty training issues. She said, " No big deal. Send him in underpants and a change of clothes. " When I got home, I told my son that " I had a nice talk with his teacher. She and I both decided you could wear underpants to school. When you need to go, just let them know. " Well, you should have seen the look on his face! lol It was like " the jig is up and now they know. " We haven't had too many problems since. So, you never know what it'll take to solve the problem. Hang in there. I really do know how you feel. And with a newborn on board as well, it's just compounding all your stress. Guest guest
Hi, That group 'sensoryintegration' is public and has been taken over by spammers. Too bad. My child doesn't have apraxia. But she does have sensory integration issues. In fact, they seem to be at the root of her speech delay. She is 3.5 years old and isn't potty trained either. She went back into private OT in late October. She was refusing to wear her clothes. It took me hours to dress her in the morning, and I eventually got fired from my job as one of the byproducts of being late to work. The OT tells me that sensory integration issues have a lot to do with late potty training. And the fits are actually defensiveness. My daughter has been known to hit me in the face; it makes me madder than hell too when she does it hard. But it is a defensive reaction. She's too little to do it on purpose. It means she needs more deep pressure. So my suggestions to you would be the following: 1) Realize you are not alone in this. Your child will eventually learn to use the potty. 2) Talk to your child's doctor. My conversation let to a very useful a referal to an Occupational Therapist who has been a life saver. 3) Don't be afraid to put your child in a part time preschool program. He may not be as verbal his peers. But he may pick up some good role models while he's ther. > > > > My son will soon go into what's called " The Teddy Program " for his > > speach delay.. Anyways.. Guest guest
I would suggest going back to diapers for a while. Perhaps your 3 year old son is not ready for the potty. You may be asking too much of yourself to try to take care of a newborn and potty train at the same time. Take a break for a few weeks and then try the potty again. My son is three and a half and not potty trained yet. I just expect, like with all of his other developmental delays, potty training is going to take longer than usual too. Good luck. > > My son will soon go into what's called " The Teddy Program " for his > speach delay.. Anyways.. I am having major issues with my 3 y/o to a > point litterally driving me nuts! Guest guest
Just an FYI, my son who has Apraxia and Sensory Processing Disorder was potty-trained at 4.3 y.o.! I thought it would never happen. He was on a timer schedule at school...every 20 minutes. At home we pretty much did nothing. He decided it was time! The best is he's never turned back and never had an accident. Guest guest
Myra, I am glad you mentioned this. I was going to suggest that Dawn ask her pediatrician to refer her son for an Occupational Therapy (OT) eval for sensory integration issues. Dyspraxia (lack of body awareness) and Hypotomia (low tone) often contribute to potty training issues in kids and go hand in hand with Apraxia. SLP's (speech language pathologists) have very little traiing (usually) in sensory issues, which as an advocate is disconcerting, since by an far most kids that I assist have a bundle of co-morbid (occurring at the same time) disorders. Actually, treating sensory issues can help across the board for learning and processing issues if the child is under the care of a very good OT.
Guest guest
Hi, My daughter (still not potty trained) used to scream when we put her on the potty. It's called positional insecurity. We got her a potty ring with handles and put a foot stool under her feet. It has made her comfortable enough not to be afraid to sit on the potty. She's just not ready. > > > > My son will soon go into what's called " The Teddy Program " for his > > speach delay.. Anyways..
