Hi. My name is .

My son had a speech delay without any specific diagnosis. I had him

tested thru the Childfind program and a Speech Therapist came to our

home and worked with him once a week until he turned 3. He then

attended the local preschool and met with a speech therapist there.

He started making " Uh, Uh " sounds. We got pretty good at basic sign

language for him to communicate to me. It was obvious he understood

a lot more than he expressed. It really got frustrating as he got

older and he would get mad because we could not understand him.

We didn't connect his snoring and not sleeping through the night

until he had a bad cold and completely stopped breathing several

times at night. We continued to notice his sleeping/ breathing

patterns and it got pretty scary. I spoke to a doctor about it and

he immediately referred us to a surgeon to have his tonsils and

adenoids removed. We were nervous to go thru with it. However, the

surgery went well and he recovered quickly. He grew about 3 inches

that month, has slept good at night, and the main benefit: his speech

improved tremendously!! People who had no idea he had the surgery

complimented him on how well they could understand him.

My son turns 5 next month and is improving on his speech constantly.

He still has a few hang ups (have you ever heard a child suck in thru

his nose to make the " s " sound and never miss a beat?), but we can

now communicate without frustration.

I look back to that day when we let the doctor put my son under and

think how scary it was. But I would do it again in a heartbeat

because of the benefits we have enjoyed!

I hope this will help someone. I know not all problems can be solved

by removing tonsils and adenoids, but our problem was diminished

tremendously.

Good luck with the speech improvements of your beloved children!
