Guest guest
Bonnie, Would you please send me one off-list as well? I've discovered when reading the agenda for this type of thing that, while they are marvelous for others, they're not for me. Ian is often far older than the discussions are intended to address. Things like transitioning between IE and school, or developing reading skills ... all very wonderful and needed topics, but my D/HOH is just too old for them. Still, I always feel energized after a professional conference, so I know I'd feel great about a D/HOH one as well. Since it's relatively close to me, it;d be interesting to see what's on the agenda. Thanks -- Jill
Guest guest
What's it about,. Bonnie. Does it give any information about what they're covering? Because I'd be interested in going... trish Visit Trish and Bobby's Marathon website at http://www.firstgiving.com/bobbymarathon A.G. Bell networking event? I received a flyer in the mail for a " A.G. Bell Networking Event " , to be held in on NY, which is very close to where we live. The flyer says it is for " parents of deaf or hard of hearing children, adults who are deaf or hard of hearing, and professionals working with deaf or hard of hearing people " . It is 2 hours long. Has anyone been to an event like this? Is it useful? Does it tend to be more for adults or is there enough focus on kids? -- Bonnie
Guest guest
I'd HIGHLY recommend any group like this. We have attended them in the past through local children's hospitals and it's been such a great place to share knowledge. Doctors, audiologist, etc. are one great place to learn of course, but experienced parents are so willing to talk - it's fantastic. --- Bonnie MacKellar bkmackellar@...> wrote: > I received a flyer in the mail for a " A.G. Guest guest
I'd definitely go! I find that any get-together like this is wonderful - you learn so much and you get to meet other parents. There may be information at the A. G. Bell website online - agbell.org - check out local chapter information Bonnie MacKellar wrote: > > I received a flyer in the mail for a " A.G. Guest guest
I've attended a few of these types of meeting as well. None organized by AG Bell though. I was so thankful to have found the first one that I attended. It was more of a social event, but they did have a police officer to come talk to the kids about stranger danger. That was the first time that I met other parents of deaf/hoh kids that were sort of in my area. There were also two parents who were deaf, but had hearing children. At that time my sign language was AWFUL!, but I was still able to hold a small conversation with them. I also met some deaf/hoh adults that I've gotten to know over the past few years. In the past two years I've been attending meetings through our children's hospital. They are organized by our audi and another audi. They usually have some topic of discussion for the parents, and the kids are taken care of by volunteers who do crafts or play games with them. Although most of the topics covered are things that I understand already...it's nice for the newer parents to hear about these thing from the " been there done that " parents.
