Guest guest
For a child to get SSI here in California it is based on the parents income. I am not sure if it is like this in other states as well since it is a Federal program. Depending on what the parents income is each month determines the amount the child will get for a particular month. The max. income over here is pretty low. It doesn't hurt to try. You can call and start the application process on the phone. le
Guest guest
There are a lot of " gotchas " with this but it never hurts to check into it - we did back when our kids were younger and didn't qualify. Most states usually have an agency or group who can help wade through the social security quagmire - in New Hampshire it's Granite State Independent living Barbara --- You wrote: Hi everyone I just wanted to say that the few days I been on this list reading everyone's posts has been amazing. There is a wealth of information here, I hope I can take it all in. Someone asked me if we are getting social security disability for Grace. I never even thought about it or that it was something we should consider but they said it would help with all her extra expenses and/or for her education. Is this something most people do or does she even qualify for this? I don't know anything about it. Guest guest
When we tried to sign Jaden up I called the 800 phone number and started the whole process over the phone with someone, I think I even did most of it online. They sent me paperwork with an appointment and then that's where the " gotchas " came in. They want proof of income, trusts, deeds, bank accounts, birth certificates, this, that, and the other. But if your family qualifies then good, I would at least try. le
Guest guest
Here in Florida is the same. They go by the parent's income month by month. Also keep in mind if you do qualify to make sure you are getting the right amount. Don't assume they are correct. They use send us checks for almost a year when my daughter Alyanna was 2 years old (she is now 7) because they told us we qualified but they where wrong because they only checked for the 1st month and they told me I was the one that had to notify them monthly of our income. Now they are telling us they over paid us so we have to pay them back. But just because I had a bad experience it won't hurt to try. Good Luck!!! in Florida Kbkcreations@... wrote: Hi everyone I just wanted to say that the few days I been on this list reading everyone's posts has been amazing. Guest guest
OMG! Same thing happened here. We did receive for Jaden a few years back and we are still paying them back for over payments. I think I still owe them about $2500. It was really a royal pain in the rear! I look at it more like a loan with us having to pay back so much! le

Guest guest
What state are you in? Apparently me experience is the exception because we have had great success. I live in PA. We called SS but were verbally denied over the phone because of our income (which we knew would happen). That was good because then we could apply for Medicaid under the disabled child waiver. In PA, if you have a disabled child (and hearing impairment counts), then you can apply for JUST your child and they are approved REGARDLESS of your income. They have picked up everything for Andy's hearing that hasn't been covered by our primary insurance. I didn't think of using it for anything else but they also cover all copays and prescriptions for him. They also will retroactively cover 3 months from when your application was approved IF you haven't paid it (they won't pay you back). So, our insurance covered a SMALL percentage of Andy's hearing aids. duPont (Children's hospital we go through), held the bill and once we got approved for Medicaid, sent it to them and they paid it. I know it isn't always this easy in all states. When I asked one of the reps at the Medicaid office why the process was so smooth. He laughed and said that no one can debate that hearing impairment is a disability so it just sails through. Again, I know this isn't the case everywhere but I'm having good success here in PA. > > OMG! Same thing happened here. Guest guest
Here in CA it's called MediCal. Jaden is ineligible for cash SSI because of our income but, like you said, is eligible for medical coverage due to his disability. Through MediCal it's called California Children's Services, or CCS, and they cover anything that has to do with Jaden's hearing loss. I'm sure the money through SSI has the same deciding factors in each state but the medical coverage for them is different state to state. le
Guest guest
I've lived in both states (CA for most of my life and now PA) and in PA, it's pretty good coverage...probably the best I've heard of. My income is such that we don't need to use the PA system but I have been advised that I should - so that Hayley is in the system when she leaves HS and gets coverage for certian things that way. > > Here in CA it's called MediCal. Guest guest
Thanks ! Not to worry, I'm not giving up on anything I feel Grace does or will need. I just see from the responses that our income level will be too high to qualify. Thanks again!! Guest guest
Your income level doesn't matter for Medicaid, only SS. YOu have to get denied for social security (based on income) than you can get medicaid for your child. Our income is too high as well for SS, there is no income barrier for medicaid if you are applying for your disabled child only. I don't mean to harp on it but I don't want you to lose out on some great help. > > Thanks ! Not to worry, I'm not giving up on anything I feel Grace > does or will need.
