Guest guest
Hi - Sam had his first mapping done today! His mapping was done fairly close to his surgery. Generally, they do the mapping between 3 and 6 weeks (although some less conservative centers map at 1 week). He's about 12 days post-surgery today. The reason for the shorter time period is because of insurance - the mapping appointments had already been set so to move them would have pushed his surgery probably into November. He's healing really fast so everyone felt comfortable with going forward... His processor is bright BLUE! It's a great color of blue - kind of bright/robin eggs blue. Like Tom, it sounded really, really weird to him. He had a hard time telling Hugh's (my husband) and my voices apart. And at one point, he got mad at Hugh because Hugh was talking to him but had a paper over his mouth. Sam said he couldn't read his lips - that of course was the point! Even at the end of the appointment, he was able to somewhat tell our voices apart and as we were leaving, Sam stopped, looked awe-struck and said " I've never heard my footsteps before! " . I *knew* I shouldn't have worn make-up today! He has his second session tomorrow. So - things are looking great. " Hears " to great hearing for Sam! Thanks to everyone here for your good thoughts and wishes - it obviously worked! Barbara
Guest guest
Barbara, thank you for that amazing update! Made me cry... So happy to hear that Sam is adjusting to his new sound, and I can't wait to hear what other " new " sounds his processor brings him! Guest guest
Barbara, I couldn't help myself in responding to your post. My son has a lot of hearing, I am told, and he is not eligible for CIs. But I was so touched by your post..what it must have been like to sit there and hear Sam say that he could hear his or your footsteps. I can't say Bobby made comments like that when he got his hearing aid, because one of his ears could hear most sounds and probably clued him into what he should have been hearing with both all along. But I find it exciting that he is now using " s " on the end of plural words more consistently because with his new 2nd aid (only got it about 2 weeks ago), he can hear high frequency sounds like " s " which he probably couldn't have heard before. It is exciting, sad in a way because don't we all wish our kids could have been hearing all those sounds others take for granted all along, but for these guys (our kids) it a gift we can't take for granted. Congratulations to you and Sam!!! Trish, mom to Bobby Even at the end of the appointment, he was able to somewhat tell our voices apart and as we were leaving, Sam stopped, looked awe-struck and said " I've never heard my footsteps before! " . I *knew* I shouldn't have worn make-up today!

Aw geez, now I'm tearing up as well. Makes me think of Ian hearing wind in the trees and whispering again after getting his first aids. Thankfully I don't have makeup on (and didn't that day either because we'd been running late, as usual). I didn't know that the processors come in colors -- one more thing Ian is going to love. Congratulations! Hug Sam for me. Jill
