Hi,

Just completed a colonoscopy today and they found a diverticulum. So,

I have to eat more fiber. I was told that there's a GF Citricel.

Does anybody have any more suggestions? I eat planty of brown rice,

fruit, veggies, etc. But I haven't been able to have any oatmeal

since going GF in May.

Unfortunately, with a diverticulum, they don't want you to eat

seeds, nuts, pop corn, etc!

Can you eat the flax meal (ground flax)? Flax is a good fiber source if you can

have it. I can't help much with the fiber supplement question. I think most of

them are psyllium based and the ones I've seen were clearly labeled and seemed

fine from a GF standpoint.

I have used rice bran/polishings in baked goods (mussins) to boost fiber. Beans

are another good fiber source. Blueberries are also high in fiber, but the skins

might be an issue for you....

I routinely eat over 50g of fibre a day.

On Thursday I ate:

- a smoothie I make with 8oz of frozen spinach (7g fibre), 2 cups

romaine (2g), an orange (4g) and a cup of blue berries.(4g), 1

tablespoon ground flax seeds (3g) - total grams of fibre in this

smoothie - 20g. (I admit that this smoothie is probably not

everyone's cup of tea, but it gives me such a zing in the morning and

is chock full of great nutrition.)

- a salad with 6 cups of lettuce (6g), 1 large carrot (2g), 1 pear

(5g), 2 dates and some flavored vinegar - total fibre in this salad 13g.

- a curry with 1 cup of beans (13g fiber), 1 carrot (2g), 2 cups

cauliflower (5g), 1 zucchini (negligible fibre), 1/2 cup peas (4g)

plus some other veggies that didn't add much fibre. - total for this

dish 24g. I served it over steamed kale instead of rice which gave

me another 8 grams of fiber. If I had used 1 cup of brown rice I

would have only had 4g of fiber. This delicious vindaloo curry

contained more fiber than most people eat in a day. LOL

that is over 50g and doesn't count the other 4 pieces of fruit I ate

( 1 cup strawberries -3g

1 apple - 6g, 1 banana - 3g and 1 cup frozen cherries - 1g.

as you can see from the above, brown rice is not a great source of

fiber, there are many other sources that give more fiber and

nutrition for the same calories.

I don't recommend that people use fiber supplements because the fiber

is devoid of all other nutrients, whereas if you get your fiber from

whole plant sources you are getting the fiber plus a lot of other

valuable phytonutrients.

I would be very happy to help you plan a menu plan for a week at a

time that is high in fiber and tastes good. I went through the same

issue as you a year ago when I discovered the diverticulosis. A very

kind woman helped me and I would love to return the favor. I am not

managing to keep up with this list at the moment, so if you want me

to give you this help, please email me at sherene@... and I will

help you with pleasure.

Hi,

Yes, I'll try sending you an email off-line but if (for some reason)

it doesn't get to you in the next 24 hours, try sending me one.

Also, I was a few cents short of a dollar yesterday mentally. I

thought about the ground flax seed after my last reply. If you

bother to read the rest of this post, you'll see why.

Long narration about this experience:

I'd had to get the spelling of my name corrected over and over and

over again. They had to use a general because I have an opposite

reaction to tranquilizers (which I also had to explain over and over

and over again to each new person). And so, it went like this - Do

you have my name correct? No, ok all the forms have to be updated.

Then they would start asking me questions - Do you know that you are

getting a general? Yes. tah dah tah dah tah dah.

Finally, in the procedure room, the doctor, who had not met me

beforehand, is insisting that I should get both ends done because of

being a celiac, two for one special or something. I'm explaining

that I've been GF since May and is the upper one going to be useful

for anything? He finally decides no.

When I wake up, this nurse is shouting at me that I have a

diverticulum and have to eat a lot more oatmeal and whole wheat

bread! And that I can't have nuts, raisins, seeds or whole kernal

corn. I'm telling her, " No, I can't eat that! I'm a celiac! And

are you absolutely sure that I can't have that stuff? " And she

doesn't understand what celiac means and finally runs to get the

doctor. Another nurse is telling me to get Metamucil or something

and I'm asking if its Gluten Free and getting this " deer caught in

the headlight " look.

Finally, the doctor shows up and tells me about the citricel and

mentions that he finally got a look at my chart and realizes that I

have a " compelling case of celiac sprue " . And told me to ask other

celiacs about other sources of fiber.

So, it was a really bizarre experience all the way through the

process. And then the nurse (after the doctor leaves) tells me that

I won't remember any of it anyway because of the drugs they used.

Well, this morning, when I woke up, all I could think was " Gee, I

had hoped she was right but unfortunately she's wrong about this

too!'

Here is a link to metamucil and gluten from the manufacturer.

I don't know if there is more to this than I know though since I am

new to being a celiac but at least you will know what the company says.

Hi,

I use an essential oil supplement that is GF daily, it contains

flax, pumpkin, sunflower, and one other type of seed/nut oil. I

think its a better alternative for me than fish oil!

But I think that the GI doc wanted me to eat more fiber rather than

the oil. Taking the oil is supposed to help raise your good

cholesterol or HDL level.

I think that the reason to add more fiber is to soften your stool

since the diverticulum is a small pouch that forms. This prevents

things from getting " stuck " (?).

Hi,

Thanks for the metamucil link! I'm relieved to know that there are

other sources out there for high fiber supplementation. I think the

main reason I would want to have a powder would be if I travel and

can't cook or something. Generally, I'd rather strive towards using

high fiber foods, if possible.

I was also asked about the essential oil blend capsules that I use.

We have a local chain called Hi-Health in Arizona that specializes

in selling health products and supplements. They actually offer

really good prices on many items. If you join their club (for free)

you can buy one regular priced item and get the 2nd for half price!

So, I usually get two of the largest size they offer and save a lot

on the price. I have them double-check my purchases to make sure

they are GF when the bottle is not labelled.

Anyway, the bottle says that this is exclusively sold at Hi-Health

and there's a contact phone number on the bottle ().

Its called Ultra Plan essential oil blend formula IV. These

softgels contain flax oil, sunflower oil, sesame seed oil and

pumpkin oil. (other ingredients - Gelatin, glycerin, carob extract,

purified water). The maximum dose is two capsules, three times a day

with your meals. It can be refrigerated or frozen. I usually just

take one at night after dinner.

I started trying to increase my " good oils " about four years ago

after a cholesterol test showed that my HDL level was " borderline " .

I just had another blood test two weeks ago and my level had risen

about 25% which was excellent news! So, I don't know if this

particular supplement helped (because I also tried using more food -

olive oil, avocado, nut butters etc. etc.) but I certainly enjoy

using it a lot more than fish oil! And if I don't get much good

oils in my diet during a short period, I can always pop an extra

capsule to " make up " for the loss.

Now, I'm beginning to wonder if I should just start eating trees

dipped in olive oil or something! ;-)

I recently had a colonoscopy too-I have diverticulosus and microscopic colitis. The GI told me to increase fiber and get fiber supplements. I found one at Wal-Mart-it's their Equate brand fiber therapy caplets, it says right on the box-Gluten Free. The bottle inside the box also says Gluten Free but read the box/bottle carefully...they also have another very similar Equate fiber product (the bottle says Fiber Laxative) and that one may contain gluten. Is flax seed oil good for adding fiber to the diet?

I need more fiber. I drink tons of water daily

(peeing constantly!), eat 5 or more, usually more

servings of fruits and vegetables daily, always have a

salad, if not for lunch then for dinner, and I have

been terribly constipated for about a month. I've

even asked my Dr. to order the CA-125 test for ovarian

cancer, the constipation is so bad. One day I sat for

over an hour on the pottie, it was awful.

Anyway, I'd like to know about the flax oil.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

If you have developed a medical condition, none of these suggestions

may cure you but they certainly can't hurt.

I think most of the fiber is " strained " out of the oil, although it

may cause some changes in your stool. What I bought is Bob's Red

Mill ground flax seed and I put a tablespoon per serving in my hot

GF breakfast cereal and my GF waffles (use one of the commercial

mixes) to add some extra fiber. One tablespoon represents about 13%

of the daily requirements. So, you still need to add some more

fiber in different ways to your diet.

Personally, I've found that if I eat fresh sliced peaches (not

canned) that it really, really helps me. This adds fiber and seems

to be a natural laxative. My grandfather taught me that. Since you

live in California, peaches should be available in the grocery

stores.

Also, if you make a mixed fruit compote of apples and pears with a

little sweetner or brown sugar to top off your hot breakfast cereal

or waffles, you'll get a lot of extra fiber in a nutritious way into

your diet.

I actually have found that my stools have loosened up a lot since

going GF and dropping most of the dairy.

BTW, most sources will tell you that lettuce doesn't add a lot of

fiber. But annecdotal evidence and from personal experience, it

seems to help out my gastrointestinal tract. But you might also

want to try cole slaw or adding cabbage to your salads for more

fiber. (I would suggest spinach but I can't find any in my area and

there's at least 5 people in local hospitals recovering right now

from their spinach consumption).

I've gotten a lot of other suggestions from people on this group and

am trying to incorporate them into my meal plan.
