I tried giving my daughter the McCann's a couple of days ago and she

has had the diarrhea and cramps on her right side ever since. I

don't know if it is the oats that are bothering her or whether there

was some cross contamination going on. Thanks for the help.

McCann's should be gluten-free. There are two

companies in the US and Canada who produce g-f oats, I

think you'll get the names from someone else, I don't

know them.

It sounds as if your daughter may be one of the many

celiacs who simply cannot tolerate oats. I'd wait a

while before I tried the other ones. Does she really

want to eat the oats? If she's been g-f for a year or

more, the try one of the others in a month, and if she

can't tolerate those, you might have to give it up.

Molly has only been gluten free for about two months--so maybe you are right that she can't tolerate oats at all. She likes them, but I can easily have other thinngs for her to eat besides that. In fact, today I made her some of that hot cream of rice cereal from Bob's Red Mill and she liked it pretty much. I had hoped she could eat the Mc Cann's but maybe if I try it later on I will have success.

Two months isn't very long to be gluten-free before

trying oats. I waited 6 years! If she likes other

hot cereals, I'd give those a try. Have you tried

quinoa? I did have some of that and it's not bad at

all. It's a grain that comes from Peru, in fact when

I was in Peru they had it at the jungle camp I was in

and I didn't know what it was, so I told them I

couldn't eat it. Came home and found that I can

indeed eat it. There's a cereal called AltiPlano Gold

that is made from pure quinoa, and it's the best hot

cereal I've had besides oatmeal. You might try it out

on Molly and see how she likes it.

I've always loved oatmeal, so I'm really glad I can

tolerate it now.

Am I missing something? The best fall eating is Hasty pudding. Corn

meal with real maple syrup.(accept no substitute!) We cook it in a

slow cooker. 6:1 ratio, milk to corn,-a tad of salt, get the real

grits if you can, but corn meal from a safe source will do. Make a

batch, then microwave as needed. Sometimes we put cheddar cheese on

top- that's the New York interpretation. Slow cooked pudding is

known as Indian pudding- which is milk, corn and molasses. Really

nice on a cold winter morn. I am not sure of the glycemic index on

molasses, but real maple syrup does not kick insulin like sugar.

When ever I get fustrated with the diet I have to remember-The

American Indians,here before us, were not complaining about the

coffee and donuts at DD.

I always react to McCann's and with *more* than just CD symptoms. I

have a wheat allergy (verified), but no oat allergy. I have allergic

reactions to McCann's: hives, eczema. It's not severe, the way I'll

react to tons of wheat, but it's obvious cross-contamination.

Haven't tried any others. Figured out I wasn't invulnerable pretty

quickly.

No plans to try the GF oats. I don't need oats in my life. If my

GERD ever goes away and I can have sugar again, I may suddenly

develop an overwhelming urge for GF oatmeal no-bake cookies (made

with a safe seed or nut butter, not peanut butter), but I doubt it.
