Guest guest
Hello, I am new to the group and my son has been on the diet for almost 3 months. He began has recently been vommitting and is having a very difficult time consuming the cream in any fashion. He did well with meals in a soup format for a while, and ice cream with fruit and flavoring. But has been very stubborn lately. Our meals are now so stressful. Any suggestions? ~Desperate! Guest guest
Dear desparate, Tanners new main menu is a soft cooked fried egg (My daughter figures the grams out) and some butter, cucumbers, 4 cashews and a dessert my daughter makes out of whipped topping, and a small amount of diet chocolate pudding (She figures out how much according to his plan. He is on 4:1 ratio. He wants it almost every meal this week. He don't have to have cream if he eats this meal. His last thing was chicken nuggets. She bought them at s or Mcs and peeled all of the skin off. He is sick of them now. Before that it was bacon, cream, small amount of fruit, and 1 diet peanut butter cup.. He still likes that one sometimes. He has started drinking diet koolaid also. He will eat celery cut up or cucumbers cut up. He gets 34 grams I think as a free food once a day. On the cream, she flavors it with chocolate flavoring that she gets at Walmart. It comes in a box with little flavoring envelopes. I have to promise him to do something fun like play a game of pool with him sometimes to get him to finish it. She freezes it for ice cream sometimes. He still eats butter okay but is kind of sick of cream. Hope this helps some. Hallie vomitting Hello, I am new to the group and my son has been on the diet for almost 3 months. Guest guest
How are ketones and seizures? He could be too ketotic if he's vomiting. You might have to lower the ratio, or consider it anyway. You can do meals w/out a lot of cream if you use more butter and oils. You can also whip cream, though I'm guessing you might have tried that. Have you tried a popsicle? Melt a bit of sugar free jello, add oil, seltzer and cream and freeze, makes a creamsicle. We also do casserole meals where I combine egg, cream, butter, a bit of oil, veggies and meat and microwave or bake. Comes out like a one dish quiche or something, no cream to drink. Is he vomiting after every meal? Is it consistent? Are you sure he doesn't have a bug? Guest guest
Dear Desperate, My first thought is constipation. That will definitely cause vomiting and refusal to eat. The other possibility is an infection of some sort. Look for fever or other symptoms. Often seizures increase first, then the illness is obvious. You certainly need to correct this ASAP and need to make some changes. What else is happening? Seizures? Meals? ratio? other? Guest guest
Check ketones. He sounds too ketotic and if they are, they really have trouble eating, esp the fat. If its not that, probably some kind of virus. Is he on any meds?? , 's mom hmltnklly wrote: > > Hello, I am new to the group and my son has been on the diet for > almost 3 months. Guest guest
We did do bloodwork to check his Co2 level? It was 19 and the dietician said it was ok. He is on 600mg felbatol at night and 50mg lamictal in the AM/PM. We have just added polycitra K to see if he is vommitting due to the acidity level. We'll see! As if the diet isn't challenging enough, but adding vomitting into the mix bites! , 's mom > > > > > Hello, I am new to the group and my son has been on the diet for > > almost 3 months. Guest guest
Well he doesn't seem constipated (I saw him have a bm last night) and doesn't seem to have any sign of illness. The first week this began he through up 5 times that week, 2 times were in the middle of the night while he was sleeping. Then he didn't get sick again for a week. At first we thought it might be his felbatol dose which he takes 600 mg of at night only, but now we have added polycitra K to see if it is due to the acidity level. He is currently on a 4:1 ratio with 3 meals a day, sometimes a half meal snack. In general, he is just tired of the food/cream and it has only been 3 months. We only got daytime control of seizures with the diet, not nightime. He has 30 per day and night. ~, 's mom > > > > Hello, I am new to the group and my son has been on the diet for > > almost 3 months. Guest guest
kelly, i'm wondering if it's the aed's making a lot of kid's throw up. maybe the body is trying to get rid of them because they are more concentrated when on the diet. our matthew has never thrown up since starting the diet a year ago. he was weaned off all aeds before starting. i'm not suggesting you stop all aeds, just something to think about. anyone out there with kid's that do vomit and are not on aeds? cheers , andrea. --- hmltnklly kelly.hamilton@...> wrote: > > We did do bloodwork to check his Co2 level? Guest guest
If it isn't that it could be reflux, especially happening at night. You are on a high ratio and that is aggravating as well. Try raising up the head of the bed. Bill hmltnklly wrote: > > Well he doesn't seem constipated (I saw him have a bm last night) and > doesn't seem to have any sign of illness. Guest guest
Hannah has been weaned from all her aed's but we continue to have issues with her vomiting. She gets 4 4ounce bottles per day and is currently throwing up 1-2 bottles per day. None of her doctors thus far have been able to make heads or tail of it. We changed her formula around but it didn't matter. Next week we will visit a Pediatric GI specialist. Hopefully we will get answers. Hannah just seems to be a really good test taker....the Ph Probe is negative for reflux, her swallow tests have been normal, her skin biopsies, muscle biopsy....all normal! Our kids are so tricky! , mommy to Hannah almost 11 months IS with underlying yet unconfirmed issues (maybe the new doctors will be able to tell us more...) Guest guest
What does it mean " the Ph Probe is negative for reflux " ? What sort of test is that? Thanks, Bill Shapiro wrote: > Hannah has been weaned from all her aed's but we continue to have > issues with her vomiting. Guest guest
Hannah has had the test done twice. Once while she was hospitalized and it was monitored by the hospital staff and once when we took her home (after the tube was placed at the hospital) and had a small monitor attached to it. The test is a 24 hour esophageal pH monitoring study that measures the duration and frequency of acid reflux ( stomach contents coming back up into the esophagus). It measures the effectiveness of the esophagus in clearing the specific symptoms of the child. This study looks at the amount of reflux in a 24 hour period, compared to the upper GI, which only evaluates reflux over a 5 minute period in one situation. (Which is good for our kids who tend to need a longer period of time to test properly. Once the pH probe is placed your child will be allowed to resume eating normally (except of course no reflux meds).Your child can not eat or drink any foods/liquids that are acidic or the test results will not be reliable. They ask you to keep a diary of food/liquid intake and instances of throwing up or spitting up. Results are pretty quick, within the second day of the probe. It is pretty noninvasive. I strongly recommend requesting the test if your child is suffering from reflux. Re: Re: vomitting > " The Ketogenic Diet....a realistic treatment option, NOT just a last resort! Guest guest
, Was this test done while she was on the diet or before? Bill Shapiro wrote: > Hannah has had the test done twice.
