Guest guest
I was wondering, we are in our second week of reintroducing the diet after a year off and is really low in energy and gets really irritable and pale, flushed and clammy about mid afternoon every day. Is this normal and is there anything we should be doing to keep this from happening? Thanks
Guest guest
I don't have my first aid book, but it could be dehydration. You should be giving fluids throughout the day. Are you restricting fluids? Guest guest
- Our nurse said to look for clammy as a sign of low blood sugar. Our son was very lethargic and irritable for the first 3 weeks when introducing the diet. His keytones were way too high though- have you checked those in the mid afternoon? Guest guest
I haven't but I'm going to today. His ketones have been the largest at night and he is having seizure control again (yeah!) but he looks flushed mid afternoon everyday. Lunch is not satisfying him and he is hungry very soon after. I'll check today and let you know Thanks
Guest guest
Bill I am having a hard time getting him to drink very much. That could be the problem. I made some home made popsicles with diet faygo and he won't eat them. I'll work on it and see what happens. It seems like it is about 3:00 or 4:00 everyday and I give him his snack and then he is better but boy does he get wicked during that time. Guest guest
I just checked his ketones and they were 160 at 1 pm. Is that too high? He is only on the 2:1 ratio. I'm shocked that he is reacting this way.
Guest guest
Hallie, He gets an afternoon snack. He gets 3 meals and 3 snacks. His ketones were 160 at 1 pm today. I think that is too high.
Guest guest
It sounds like he's either too ketotic, acidotic, or dehydrated. Is he drinking all his allotted fluids? And what are the ketone checks showing? Is he panting too? That's another sign of any of the above. Urinating enough? Can you tell? Do you have the urine stix (Bayer) that show ketones, specific gravity, acidity? Guest guest
How about an afternoon snack figured in with his diet. Guest guest
Are you giving snacks between meals? Snacks should be part of your meal plan. Guest guest
: Well it seems like that it may be a little to high for him " side effect " wise - irritable, lethargic, but you are seeing better seizure control, so you have to weigh the two. Zaki was fast to go into ketosis and is always at the 80-160 usually the 160. If the stick turns dark immediately then my opinion is that it is probably too high - but if it take the 15-20 seconds that it should then maybe he is not. Such a delicate balance. Really have to go by how his body is reacting. I am a little surprised that he is that high at only 2:1 also.... Did the stick turn 160 IMMEDIATELY ?? Re: Paleness/ clammy/irritable I just checked his ketones and they were 160 at 1 pm. Is that too high? He is only on the 2:1 ratio. I'm shocked that he is reacting this way. Guest guest
, I'm not a expert but that does sound pretty high. What ratio are you on? Maybe you should talk to your keto nutritionist about lowering it a little. Hallie Re: Paleness/ clammy/irritable Hallie, He gets an afternoon snack. He gets 3 meals and 3 snacks. Guest guest
It may or may not be too high. If you have inadequate fluids that will give a much higher reading in the urine. Also if you don't have symptoms of high ketones, it may be okay. It also depends on what is happening with seizures. Bill lloydandleslie@... wrote: > Hallie, > He gets an afternoon snack. Guest guest
Like I said, it is affected by hydration and concentration of urine. Also certain medications can also affect ketones. There might also be something wrong with the diet calculations or preparation. If there are no symptoms, it may not be a problem. Guest guest
Thanks . Since we switched back to red crystal light, we have been getting more fluids in him. He is doing so much better cognitively and his gait has gotten so much better. He just seems to have this afternoon blood sugar issue and he gets pale, lips white and irritable everyday about 2:00. I have had to give him his snack then and then he is so hungry for dinner and I think maybe he just needs a little more to hold him over but I hate to increase or change yet. Did you survive November with Jess? is a November seizure kid too. WOnder why? I think it has to do with the change in seasons??
Guest guest
Barb, He gets 3 meals and 3 snacks. He is a compulsive eater so we have to space it out or he will sneak food. He is 1290 calories and 26 g protein. Gee I wish he could have more protein b/c the fish and chicken seem soooo small. I am going to try your idea with the fluids and I'm going to get a pitcher and mark it to keep track of it. The fluids have definately helped the irritability and the hunger. turns 7 Dec 22. He is 47 pounds and 45 inches tall. We'll just have to watch and see. His teacher called me from school to tell me how great he was doing and how much better he was since the diet so I know it is doing its magic. Remind me-how long have you had Jake on the diet? Guest guest
, one thing that helped us with hunger is to evenly space out drinks and food. So, Jake gets, for example, breakfast at 7:30/8, drink at 10, with a small snack, lunch at 12, drink at 2:30, meal at 4, drink at 6, meal at 7:30. It helps get the fluids in and I think it helps keep hunger at a minimum. Aren't you doing 3 meals and a snack? Maybe try for 4 meals w/ drinks in between? How many calories again? We just raised Jake but he was at about 1400. (he's 9 and 60lbs) Barb Swoyer, Jake's mom Re: Paleness/ clammy/irritable > > Thanks . Guest guest
Don't even ask....over 7 years. Will be 8 years in May. We've decided trying to get seizure control in any way is better than focusing on weaning. Right now he's on meds, diet, VNS. Ugh. > > Remind me-how long have you had Jake on the diet? > > > > > > > >

Have you actually checked his blood sugar when he is like that? Thats what I would do > Did you survive November with Jess? I'm still here so must have > is a November seizure kid > too. WOnder why? I think it has to do with the change in seasons?? Don't know, November was one of her initial seizure months, then over time November moved to August, last year (after every one of the three seizure months had moved once), August moved back to November. She ain't typical, she's ) > > > > > >
