,

You could try giving him ice chips... make home made popsicles as they are

fun to eat. or try sparkling water, stella loves all those.

We were told by our dietician not to count any of the cream as " fluid

intake " . I clarified that with her when we initiated, because " The

Book " says that liquids should be clear and non-caloric. It goes on

to say that in hot climates (which ours is in the summer when we

initiated)the cream " may " be excluded from the fluid allowance. I'd

be curious to know what Hopkins dietician recommends. Ours said she

usually calculates fluid allowance to exclude cream. As it turned

out, was allowed to have unlimited fluids after the first month

of the diet in order to keep ketones from going too high for her.

, hope you get things sorted out for soon. I'm sorry your

dietician isn't helping and you are " on your own " . My always

ddid better with " lower " ketones, too, so I'm trying to think what

might have happened to upset the apple cart for your when she

had been doing so well. Nothing specific comes to mind, yet... but

I'll keep thinking. Glad things are at least starting to look a

little better.

We initiated at JH and unless I am way off target, our dietician said NOT to

count cream as fluid intake. in fact, she ran our meal plans for us and cream

is included and the meals are all balanced calorically and by his ratio. Fluids

are separated - gets 1000 mls a day.

only averages about 100 gms cream per day anyways, so when calculating

half as fluid, approx 50 mls per day is really neither here nor there. He is

still way below what he should be having fluid wise, which is about 1500 mls. I

know for a fact there is no way he will ever drink this much, he never did pre

diet or pre topomax either.

She also said to push jello when he wouldn't drink much, as I could use all

that water content as part of his fluid intake (sounds like this isn't what

others have been told though?)

Remembering though that we are not trying to restrict fluids, we are trying to

encourage them instead.
