I am so pissed this morning.. does life ever get easy?

I have been dealing with insurance companies and the police for the past

couple of days..

I put my van in the shop last week to get some needed work done ..

while it was there .. it was broken into (along with a few other cars)..

my standard wheelchair was stolen plus a duffle bag containing my dog's

mobility assistance harness was taken.

I only use the harness on him when he is pulling the wheelchair .. so I

leave it in the van ..

my van was there about 3 hours when they called me and told me about the

break ins ..

and get this .. their insurance doesn't cover it .. " We are not

responsible for any items left in the vehicles. "

and neither does my insurance company ..

aaaggghhhh... I have no proof the wheelchair was in the van ..

other than the obvious lack of a wheelchair now at my house..

but the insurance company doesn't see that as proof..

sighs .. and get this .. since my medical insurance already paid for one

wheelchair .. they wont pay for another ..

I am just so angry about this ..

angry with myself for leaving it in there ..

and angry with the chit of a person who stole it..

sighs ..

with my finances .. there is no way I can afford a new wheelchair right

now .. and the dog's harness was special made (most of them are) .. and

it cost over $300 .. so .. that is going to be put on hold too.

You know what the insurance guy said?? .. without a wheelchair .. you

don't need the harness now do you?

ok .. thanks for listening ..

I just needed to let it out before I exploded!

guess I will look in the paper and see if someone has a used wheelchair

I can buy ..

would be cheaper than a new one .. would just have to clean it ..

sighs ..

hugs..

What a bummer - and the items stolen so obviously belong to someone with special needs. It's not like they would be easy to unload or have much use to the average person. Did you check with both your auto insurance and your homeowner's policy? I had clippers & blades stolen from my van one time - the car policy didn't cover it (couldn't prove they were in the van vs. at home or work) but the homeowners covered all after a deductible (not much but it was a help).

Another thought - even if the shop owner's insurance "doesn't cover it" unless he has a sign posted prominently (as the laundromats do, for example) saying he is NOT responsible, can you do something with the idea he is responsible for things left in his care?

It won't help this time but maybe it would be worthwhile checking around with some of the service dog organizations and see if they know if there is a source of special insurance on special equipment? Seems to me someone should have thought about it - and that it is an area where there wouldn't normally be a high percentage of claims so it would be affordable for a broker to write the insurance.

,

I too am pissed that your items were stolen! I would love to get my hands around the thiefs that stole your things. I'm so tired of this world being full of people that are to damn lazy to get a real job! Check your homeowner/renter policy as most have a clause that covers a certain dollar amount of off premises property. You will have to pay the deductible but it will at least be something.

Good luck!

, I know some people have an " umbrella " policy on their house. It

usually covers the items in your car as well. Do you know if you have such

insurance on your house.

I'm sorry to hear about your stolen stuff. Makes it even worse when they steal from someone that they know is ill or disabled. We had 4 thefts this year, all when my husband was in the hospital. Whoever it was knew when he was there & that I always stay with him. We lost about $3000 worth of birds. We'll never be able to replace them now with him on disability.

Do you have any kind of local trade paper in your area? Here we have one that is just a classified ads paper. A lot of times I see used medical equipment like wheelchairs that aren't needed anymore, for sale cheap.

I hope you have good luck finding what you need.
