Guest guest
Thanks for posting this, . Truly, from the bottom of my heart. I have been putting off applying for SSI for many not-very-well-articulated reasons, while we struggle financially on a daily basis to keep up with the CF-related expenses. It's not an easy thing to do! But I am more encouraged to do it after reading this! And a huge CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
For all of you struggling to get SSI...my son being on antibiotics 6 times in one year constituted him as being on IV antibiotics in the hosp..those two equal themselves out supposedly. That's how our final decision was made. Also, find an attorney that specializes in SSI. They want a percentage or $4,000.00 . We had over 16,000.00 in back pay so that wasn't a very big deal. We applied Dec. 1996 and were approved June of 1999. Just want to warn everyone though. With our SSI whatever we make depends on what our son gets. If we gross $2,000.00 a month then he gets nothing. It's a hassle with us as my husband is self employed and he has a full time job that periodically requires overtime. So, we never know from month to month what he will get in SSI money. Guest guest
HI WEll after 7 months I finally got my son approved for SSI with full benefits..YAY!!! It has been a very rough 7 months and I wasnt sure if I'd make it, but for once we came up smelling like Roses (no pun there huh) I had to have written 10 some odd letter to the SS office. No to mention his medical records from his 5 month stay in the hospital. Some of the letters consisted of our step by step daily routine and I mean everything.. Other letters were enough to make you cry at the first sentence,. And others were of rage ..stating that there are people with far less disabilities / disease and or birth defects that recieve SS benefits why not my son.. Well It all paid off and I just wanted to give hope to those that are in the middle of filing and or have filed or others that are afraid to file..You can do it! I had so many mixed feelings about filing for SSI and put it off for over a year, but then I got to thinking why am I paying all these out of pocket expenses that are really hitting us hard. Not to mention the fact that we pay over $1,000. a month for our Health Insurance, which keeps going up..and when we tried to get a new insurace it wouldnt cover J or there were stipulations.. so much for the non- discriminatory laws. Guest guest
I can't believe SSI is so hard to get on cf kids! My sis applied right after diagnosis of my nephew, Rodney and they approved her right away! What's the problem with these people. Once the kids test positive for cf there is no question of their disability. Keep fighting until you get it approved! Also, If you do not have insurance CF Foundation will cover their cf related expenses. I think you just have to apply for their assistance. Sis gets both for my nephew---'cept when she works and has insurance, then the cf foundation pays whatever her insurance does not pay. Good luck! Guest guest
Another source of additional income my sis is getting is from these hospital stay insurance programs. We get the junk mail all the time to sign up for them. They advertise " no medical exam required " . We were told about them by other mom's at Birmingham Children's Hospital, so, the next one that came in, she mailed it back. Every time Rodney goes in the hospital, they pay $$$. I think she has to argue with them sometimes but seems to get the $ from them fairly promptly. She went ahead and applied for tow or three so every time Rodney goes in the hospital he knows he will get a treat when he gets to go home. It encourages him to not fight the treatment and take his meds with no hassle. And to breath harder when they do the breathing tests. Just thought I would pass that along----watch your mailbox---we get them all the time--at least 5-6 times a year. Good luck everybody! You were right on, about the lawyer and the amt. of income for the family. They dig into all your assets, home, cars, life insurance, stocks ,bonds, bank accts etc.... It's an awful feeling, but a neccesary one in their eyes.. I'm so glad you won! Does your get full medical coverage ontop of a monthly check?? That was quite a back-pay check! Guest guest
, We are not allowed to touch that big back pay....unless it is for medical expenses and education. We did purchase an airconditioner also. Our Dr. had to write a note explaining that it would be beneficial to his health. As far as the medical fees. We were on the medical assistance ( kids only ) and they were the ones who told us to try for SSI. If we didn't try then they would have taken the MA card away from us. Right now he falls under the category of a life long illness so they can never take his card away. That's what we were told by our social service worker at the hospital. It is different in every state though. One family I know bought a camper with SSI money because they thought it would be an educational tool. Like going to museums and to different educational places. Their SSI was revoked because of that mistake. We also need to keep receipts of purchases we use his SSI money for. One quarter of almost all of our bills can be paid with this money also. I know kids who get SSI for Attention Deficit Disorder and theyaren't required to keep receipts. I guess maybe it depends on what type of illness you've got. That big back-pay, bye the way, needed to go into a dedicated account that we had to set up. We have it set up as a checking and a savings as some of you may look into doing. The savings collects interest. from PA
Guest guest
Since when CFF cover your CF expenses? We didn't have insurance when my son was dx over a year ago. I called the cff chapter in Metarie La. and they were no help I call the cff main office nothing. His meds. were over 2000.00 a month we went bankrupt until I got help from the people of Pulmonyze started giving it to me for free. But the rest we had to pay. I was told I couldn't applied for SSI because of income then we didn't even qualify for no kind of Medicaid. My last hope was CHIP which down here is called LACHIP didn't either because we went over 200.00 a month and I told them we spend more than that in meds. I was told too bad that don't count. They don't give you credit for meds. you spend. Finally after months of paperwork, calls and Internet searches I found a program that my son qualified. The problem is it's only temporary so starting in April I have to try to get something else for him because starting June 1.2002 we will have no insurance. I have no social worker who can help me. Don't get me wrong the CF Center in Children's do have one but up to this date hasn't helped me at the beginning I asked for help but was told of my income. This year my husband made less money so I have to see if we qualify. That is why I want to move to Florida they have a program that even if you don't qualify for free or reduce (Chip) then you can purchase the insurance for about 80.00 a month per child and covers everything. Well, if it's true that the CFF covers it then a least is a relieve. Debbie Mom to Sharon 16 ncf, 10 ncf & 2 wcf
Guest guest
They told me it's an as needed funding and if your child is eligible for even a dollar they get it and full medical coverage.. My suggestion is to log onto your city's social security site and scout out the answers they should all be there.. And what you make is a big consideration more so than the actual disability. I can honestly say that because my husband is self employed it worked in our favor..his business showed a loss and even though he takes home pay it doesn't count..it gets complicated but they went over all of our tax statements several times.. If you lease a car, it's not your asset there for it cant be counted against you..my husband does his bills and banking thru the Co so we didn't have to show a bank account status because it's his business not personal and doesn't count against us. things like that..so it's wise to know alot before you go in there because the case worker I was dealing with didn't have a clue about the leased stuff and business status.. Guest guest
OMG ..That is so unreal that they make you account for what you spend the $$ on.. Gosh I'm stunned although I shouldn't be considering I see and hear alot. How can they say what is or is not beneficial to your child..they aren't DR's! And even with medical expenses I'm sure there is $$ left over with which you could buy the child clothes, educational things and or a movie.. The laws should really be changed on that..Have you written any letters to your state rep? It cant hurt, and you may even be able to do it via e-mail.. We are taking our back pay and having the rugs pulled up and wood floors put in..due to severe allergies and asthma for both kids.. also I'm getting more air purifiers. They decided to take 's ssi and medicaid because she was " in remission " . I swear that was on a piece of paper in her file. Guest guest
If you have a lifetime illness, in Pennsylvania, they CANNOT take the medical card away! There are 3 different categories that they can fall under. If one fails try the other. Contact your local assistance office and talk to your caseworker. SSI..they CAN take that if you make too much or have over $2,000.00 in resources. SSI is SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME. Supplemental being the key word. Also, since my son takes Ultrase MT 12, all we need to do is send a copy of proof of purchase from the pharmacy to Scandipharm and they send us Scandishakes AND ADEK vitamins. from PA

Guest guest
, Can you ask SSI if that $3,000.00 would be business related? That is $$$$ made from a business. Unless of course you don't claim your farm as a business on your taxes at the end of the year. $3,000.00 is too much to have. The maximum for you to have would be $2,000.00 and I think your child may be able to have $1,000.00. from PA

Guest guest
I'm not a pro with this SSI stuff. Peggy, My husband has a truck and has his own drywall business. SSI doesn't count the truck or his $$$$$ because it's all business related. So we don't count any of that for our resources. At the end of the year when we do taxes though his profit from his business counts as our income. And so dose his employment throughthe school. We send in those paystubs every month by the 10th. I'd say that if we gross $2,000 or more then we don't receive SSI $$$. Back to the taxes...we estimate a year in advance what we think will be profit from drywall business. They divide that by 12 months and add that in with income for the month. Am I talking out my B---? , Can't you separate farming expense from household expense? from PA
Guest guest
Because farming is our only income, we sell in the fall, it may look like there's a lot in the bank, we get paid all in one lump sum, but it goes for househould expense, and also farm expense, and because of pre-existing conditions we are stuck paying a high insurance rate that keeps going up every year untill they price us out. -- In cfparents@y..., ck570@a... wrote: > , > Can you ask SSI if that $3,000.00 would be business related?
