Margie RIn South Central PA...on the Mason Dixon Line We don't even do cake anymore at any family birthday. Not bc of the Celiac, but bc no one ever seems to really like it or miss it. We've gone to Make Your Own Sundae bars (and I usually make a pan of GF brownies and cut them into small bits) and that is a HUGE hit!!! So, just food for thought.... I explained to my husband, nothing that has touched glutened foods can tough the GF, or I'll get terribly ill. He doesn't get it, but he is trying to, he's not like he was. But gee, sure wish people would better understand what we're dealing with. Is it just me, or is it hard for everyone else also to explain why the gf icecream cannot get touched by the cake? I cannot believe how dh seemed as if I were overreacting. When the party was over, I sent the rest of that poison cake home with a niece. Great idea about the sundae bar for the next party, though! Lauretta I would've shot my husband if he brought home a regular cake. It's one thing when you go somewhere else and it's unavoidable, but geeze in your own home!? Especially with so many great cake mixes out there for GF. I haven't had a problem explaining the cross contamination issue, even to my thick headed SIL, but I do have to do it EVERY time. My sainted MIL and SIL are very careful about their glutens... Mum's hubby, well, lets just say hes a bit different (in many ways) and really doesnt give a pinch about anyone but himself. The boys, well, they are boys... Hungry, early 20's, shovel in food without tasting etc... Think I will make the PB cookies tonite... its super nice today and I have a bit more planting to do, so going to take advantage!Best!CassiGluten free in downtown Imatra! Stay in the know. I'm in a social group that meets twice a month. For one event we were at a restaurant party. I'd gone out of my way to talk to the kitchen about what I could eat and couldn't eat. There was a giant lovely fruit salad but the hostess had set it on the buffet table right next to the gluten goblin try (danish). I wanted some fruit BEFORE glutenoid gobblers dropped crumbs on the fruit. The doctor in my social group (an MD, not a PhD doctor) gave me a hard time when he noticed my consternation. I didn't want to LEAP upon the fruit salad and appear greedy and rude, but I didn't want to get glutened either. I explained my problem and he laughed... " A few crumbs won't hurt any one! " I was instantly full of self doubt. But you know what? Doctors ain't G-d. They don't walk on water. And sometimes (gasp!) they're even just plain wrong. In this particular case, this doctor doesn't know how sick I get from just a crumb of cross-contamination. I know how sick I get. He doesn't. I was rude to feel so anxious about the fruit. He was rude to be telling me to not fret about cross contamination crumbs. So, the inability to believe in the dangers of cross contamination isn't strictly limited to stubborn family members! It extends to the far reaches of humanity and even includes very well educated and well experienced people WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER! Guest guest Posted September 21, 2006 Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 I have a friend whose 17 y/o daughter is diabetic and celiac. Her Dr. told her that once a month she could eat gluten! When the mom told me this I nearly died, I was speechless! But it does happen. I only hope that the girl who is celiac gets very ill when she eats the gluten and realizes that the Dr. is wrong! She was told she has a mild case of Celiac since she doesn't display symptoms and that she can eat gluten as long as she doesn't get sick!! And to make it worse she actually follows what the doctor says and not the GF diet. When my friend told me this, my jaw nearly hit the floor. My friend asked me if I had a more severe case and thats why I have to avoid gluten. I told her Celiac disease is Celiac disease. And that even if you don't display symptoms you are still doing damage on the inside and putting yourself at risk for so many more problems by eating gluten. I mentioned that her friend was at a greater risk for other autoimmune diseases and CANCER! My friend was shocked. I hope the word gets back to her other friend(whom I've never met)!!!
