They send you a small bowl thingy to hang on the toilet rim and catch

the sample, so they are looking for more than a smear.

The bowl reminds me of an empty Cool Whip container. It comes with a nice lid and recommendations to seal and put in your freezer until just before pickup.

I'm pretty sure the instructions said 1/2 cup of poo and it doesn't have to all

be from the same time but you do need to keep it in the freezer until you can

mail it. That part sort of grossed me out!

Ok, that helps. I'm so grateful for this group! I have mainly

lurked for the last year or so looking for recipes or restaurant info

for myself, but now with a potentially celiac child, this is an

invaluable resource!

Enterlab tends to be more helpful than many GI doctors even. When my

GI doctor wanted a stool sample, all they gave me was a little plastic

container and I just had to figure it out for myself, it ended up being

kind of awkward.

I can't speak for all here, but after having 'CD' symptoms for 16

years it's very hard to be grossed out.

If I understand what they are doing correctly, the bowel

produces, and particularly the celiac upper bowel produces

much antibodies as it appears to be the site of anti-tTG production.

These anibodies are in the mucous and in the mucous that coats

the small intestines allowing water to be adsorbed and feces

to pass unobstructed. They are interested in the white coating

that is commonly observed in celiac feces as this should be rich

in antibodies.

Typically when I survey patients' seras for reactivity to antigens

I used dilutions of 1:300 to 1:1000 and typically this results

in about 3 ul of sera, assuming that Ab concentrations in the feces

are comparable they might need 10 or 20 ul of the mucousy film.

But of course we also take grams of sera and freeze them in aliqouts

for later testing or retesting. [3ul is alot actually because with

it I can survey 30 antigens so about 1/10th of a ul per antigen.

Course, we use RIA and they may be using the less sensitive ELISA.

IOW for the immunochemical test you don't need much.

Some sympathy to the person who has to open the sample,

celiac poo can be quite offensive smelling.

A little note to be encouraging to any of the women

out there who have been trying to get pregnant and

have recently been diagnosed with CD...Give yourself

about a year. My husband and I dropped a small fortune

on fertility (over 5 years) before I was diagnosed.

Now I'm 15 weeks and going strong.

So. It'll happen. Give it time.

Congratulations, Kendra! As a 7+ year infertility treatment veteran

(with four kids- 1 adoptive and 3 biological), I know how great that

feels. Makes me wonder how much money and time we would have saved had

we known about the CD connection back then, not to mention the

emotional rollercoaster.

I just got my entrolab test kit in the mail. It's

been sitting on my counter for a couple of days. I'm

just a little embarrassed to poop in it & freeze it

then send it to a total stranger! I'm having

nightmares of the person opening the container having

to wear a hazmat suit, then calling 50 people to

surround it & examine it and talk about it! It just

seems like such an ichy-messy thing to do....I guess

I'll just have to get up the nerve to do it. I'm

tired of being sick all the time. I also am scheduled

with a gastroenterologist to run tests too. I don't

know if I really need both...it seems redundant, but I

guess I'm just desparate to find what's been causing

my aches & pains. I didn't used to have much GI

disturbace, but I cut out wheat a few months back, and

now everytime I eat it, or something that may contain

it, I get a bloated belly & abdominal cramping. I'll

keep the board updated on the results.

Yes, I had the same experience! Not pleasant. That's why I was

wondering what I'd be in for with a 4 year old! Thankfully, according

to other replies I have gotten, Enterolab makes it easy.

The paperwork says to pass one complete bowel movement into the bucket. It

says if you're collecting from a baby's diaper, you need at least 1/2 cup so

you can use more than one bowel movement to get to the half-cup if you need

to.

I had to pay attention because I was dealing with a baby in diapers.
