Guest guest
Hi everyone! I posted last weekend b/c my son's ketones were very low. We just started the diet on the 18th of Oct. I talked to our dietician last week and she wanted to wait before tweaking anything just to let his body adjust to the diet. I PROMISE I am following her meal plans to the letter!! was constipated for a fun filled NINE DAYS! We just got that resolved today! I had his urine tested at our pedi. b/c my multi stix indicated a bit of blood in his urine. There was indeed a slight trace so they are culturing it this weekend. The pedi. said his ketones were only +2 which is about what we were getting at home. Whew! All of that said...we are seeing more seizures today - I am guessing due to the low ketones and possibly the constipation finally being relieved? He also has a slight cold! Do you guys - the experts!- think he went so low because his calories are too high? Can ketones drop b/c of an illness he may be brewing or the constipation? He was ketonic in the hosptial before we left! He can't get into food on his own and only his dad and I are feeding him. I make all of his meals! We'll talk to our dietician next week, but I was wondering if you also have any idea of what will happen next. Sorry this is so long! I'm feeling really stupid these days and like I am an amateur detective! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks- Leigh
Guest guest
Leigh, You are definitely NOT stupid, but because you are now a keto mom, you ARE an amateur detective--soon to be a PROFESSIONAL ) Our kiddos are very different in the way they metabolize foods, so fine tuning the diet is usually necessary. Some kids make ketones very easily and get too ketotic, some don't make ketones so easily. Having just been on the diet for 2 wks. and having problems with consitpation (which is very common--good for you for getting it resolved!) PLUS having a cold, 's body has gone through a lot! For this reason, most dieticians don't want to make changes to the initial diet prescription right away so don't be discouraged by that. Illness definitely can cause low ketones. Have you tried decreasing his carb or leaving it out all together? That will effectively raise the diet ratio and decrease cals. temporarily. It will give you a clue as to whether changes may be necessary. It's too soon to know if will gain weight on the cals. he's on now, but where is he on the growth charts weight wise--slender? normal? chubby? If he's slender my guess is that your dietician might eventually recommend upping the ratio (depending, too, on where it is right now). If he's chubby, she might recommend a calorie decrease. Normal weight could go either way--ours would recommend a calorie decrease first, I think. It might also depend somewhat on his age. I can't remember if you mentioned how old he is. Constipation can cause an increase in seizures, so that may be a contributing factor, too, in addition to low ketones. Is there a chance that he's getting too much fluid? (usually the opposite is the case, especially at first) That can also " dilute " ketones. AEDs can affect ketone levels, too. Do keep in touch with your dietician. Hopefully, she will help you with the " detective " work. Are you keeping a journal? We were told to keep track of EVERYTHING at the beginning. It can really help you to make connections or see a pattern. Overall, it sounds like things are going well. Fine tuning the diet can be a slow process. It's best to make changes one at a time and give time to see results. It make take just a few little tweaks or several. Either way, hang in there!! The diet is worth it when it works. Keep us posted! Guest guest
Leigh, Constipation will throw off the diet. Try giving the maximum allowable water and maybe add some milk of magnesium each day. Too high calories can lower ketones and bring on seizures. It is important to fine tune the diet exactly for calories. It can take a lot of detective work and maybe another head or two to determine the changes you need to make. Sickness can throw off the diet too. Bill jacksondoodle2002 wrote: > > Hi everyone! I posted last weekend b/c my son's ketones were very > low. We just started the diet on the 18th of Oct.
