Guest guest
HELP! Have any of you experienced unusual reactions to antibiotics when on the diet and on almost no anticonvulsants??? Rebekah has been on suprax since last Friday and she started to react on Monday. She threw up in the afternoon, which is a normal reaction because it has upset her stomach previous times. But that night she began waking up screaming, jerking and twitching uncontrollably...almost like when she went through her frizium withdrawl a year ago..anyway this went on all night for the next three nights. The past two nights it has ended in a grand mal seizure in the early morning hours.....she is getting crankier as are we all since none of us are getting much sleep. Her ketones seem normal but am wondering if that may be inaccurate because of the suprax in her system.....maybe we should have upped her ratio for the time she is on antibiotics???? We had been giving it to her at noon but today we decided to try to give it to her with her breakfast to see if that makes a difference......she seizured 15 mins after giving it to her...... I am open to suggestions as to how to deal with strep throat and high fever without antibiotics.......we certainly don't want to live through this again!!! We have two doses left but are considering not giving her anymore if we have a similar night. LaVerna, mom to Rebekah who is down to one depakote capsule a day.......and on diet for 3 years
Guest guest
Try giving Probiotics or other source of good bacteria between doses of antibiotic. Continue with good bacteria for a few days after completing the anti-biotic to get the bowels working again. Keep up fluids. Guest guest
That's a shame, I guess you need to figure out if it's the antiobiotic or the specific brand of Suprax. Jake was diagnosed w/ strep yesterday and I have the doctor give him a shot of penicillin (or whatever like it, not sure if it's that specifically) - that way we avoid all carbs and taking meds etc. It hurts, that's the hard part...it's a big shot...but then we are over and done with it. It seems like you can't win either way. I would leave the ratio alone, it's such a temporary thing w/ the antibiotic, but maybe next time try a different antibiotic or give a shot. It sounds like she obviously has a reaction - a bad one, I think personally I would stop the antibiotic. Does she still have a high fever? Could that be the culprit? I would think it's NOT from any carb content in the Suprax, unless she is very, very sensitive to carbs/diet. AT a low ratio I would doubt that's the case. If you stop the antibiotic today is she then prone to not getting over the strep? I think I would take that risk....and next time go for a different brand. I also think I would try oral again first, because if she IS reacting to antibiotics in general, the shot is one, big, powerful dose all at once...that could be scary for her. Another thought, do you ever give her preventative meds when she's sick? Jake seizes more when he's sick and I usually give him a lttle Ativan to get him over the hurdles. It works well for him. Maybe you could do something similar to get her through the next two doses if you stay on it, Ativan or Valium or something? Well, on anticonvulsants, I am absolutely convinced that antibiotics wreak havoc with my son's seizure control. No doctors 'believe' it...but I dread putting him on anything as we always see a big increase in seizures. Our neuro is convinced that it's the illness itself that lowers his seizure threshold...but the increase lasts the duration of the antibiotics...long after the original illness has faded.
