I don't mean to sound judgmental, but I agree with Dr. R. For whatever

reason, you chose not to go through with it. He told us at clinic about

another patient who had cancelled hers. All the tools were opened and had to

be thrown away, because once opened they cannot be reused.(Maybe that wasn't

the case with you if there were several patients and the next patient just

moved up the line.)

The cost was over $6,000, just in the materials they lost, not to count the

cost of his time and the hospitals. Someone has to pay that expense. He

wasn't telling the story to say, wow, look what happened, but to point out

that the instruments used are expensive and this is one of the reasons this

is a very expensive surgery. Are you prepared to pay for the costs that were

incurred if your insurance company doesn't? Do you expect Dr. R or the

hospital to cover it?

Over time, it will hurt his reputation with the hospital, and others, if he

has two operating rooms ready to go and regularly cancelling patients. Two

operating rooms is nearly unheard of. It would appear that he is not

preparing patients well enough for surgery and we know he can't be accused of

that. Be glad that he is WILLING to do the surgery again, at a later date.

I hope this doesn't sound mean, because I really don't intend it that way or

feel mean about it, I just want to point out some of the issues I think you

should think about. I think you cancelled for some significant reason and

now you are regretting it. I can understand all of that. There are

consequences to the decisions we make. What if you had had the surgery and

had a leak. Maybe you would be saying, " I knew I wasn't ready and should

have waited... " I think you need the time so you can be sure, really sure,

that this is what you want. I really suggest that you find a psychologist to

talk it out with. You could really find out some helpful stuff to help you

on your journey later on, as well.

You know if someone walked into Dr. R's office today and said I want to self

pay and have surgery next week, he wouldn't do it. He would require them to

go through the steps we have all gone through because they have a purpose. I

think he feels like having you wait for 3 months isn't to punish you

(although I am sure it feels like that) but is because it has a purpose. He

is doing what he believes to be in your best interest. That is all any of us

can ask for.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I know this is a really tough time for

you. But remember, " Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God's world by

mistake! "

YEAH AMY... That had to feel great. It is nice to hear there are some sweet

docs out there. As for your friend... I am not surprised, I reacted the same

way the first person suggested that I have a bypass. Like...are you out of

your MIND!!! But, that was the first seed and it has taken root. The person

who suggested it was a nurse at a doctor's office and I don't even

particularly LIKE her, but I will always be grateful for that suggestion.

I'll bet your friend watches you like a hawk and ends up doing it herself

when she sees how well it works for you!

Very well said. I could not agree with you more. Dr. Rutledge is a very

wise and extremely compassionate man.

That's what I'm hoping - that she'll see me being able to live life instead

of this tired existence! It would just be so nice to have someone to go

through it with, since I'm not in NC to attend support meetings and such.

Thank goodness for this list! I hope when my time comes I get some good

" littermates " !

Blessings

~Amy.

I'm sorry but compassionate is not an adjective I would use to describe Dr.

Rutledge today. My husband had his surgery yesterday morning and we were

all but pushed out the door today even though my husband really felt like he

needed another day. I was extremely impressed with Dr. Rutledge during the

pre-operative phase and at the clinic visit, however his bedside manner

leave quite a bit to be desired. Although, I have to agree with his

decision regarding the waiting period for the patient who backed out. We

heard she backed out not once, but twice. I agree she should re-evaluate

and give it some time.

I actually just sold a whole bunch of clothes to one of my co-workers. She

took home a full trash bag for $30. Worked out wellfor me (more room in the

closet for new clothes) and for her. She had probably $700 worthof clothes in

that bag...but I can't wear them anymore so might as well get some money out of

them :)
