Thanks for all the help. Caitie was on Valproic Acid before we started the

diet and it help with her mycolonic jerks. We went off of it because it had to

many carb's. Caitie is all g-tube feed. Our Nero was going to add Depakote

(pills) because she is still having some 5 to 10 min jerks. But I will now talk

to

them and ask about the side effects. Caitie is still on

zonogran, klonopin, keppra and going off of topamax. And are to start going off of

zonogran.

I think Depakene is liquid which means it probably contains sugar which

would effect the portion size on the diet.

Sherri,

Depakene (valproic acid) and Depakote (sodium valproate) are known to

cause problems with the diet. As the body metabolizes fat, one of

the many " breakdown products " is an acid that is a direct precursor

of valproic acid. There hasn't been a definite connection made, but

it makes sense that could be the reason that many kids go " toxic " on

depakene/depakote after they have been on the diet for a while. In

addition, both the drugs and the diet can deplete carnitine. One of

the two alone can do a pretty good job, but both together have a

really good chance of seriously lowering carnitine levels. Both

drugs can also stress the liver. They can cause increased ammonia

levels. Increased ammonia levels along with increased acidosis from

the diet can present yet another bad situation.

I hope your doc is having you wean Topamax because it is a carbonic

anhydrase inhibitor which also makes the body more acidic. It,

together with the diet has caused some kids to become dangerously

acidic. I don't understand why he would want you to start another

drug, especially depakene, along with the diet. If it were me, I

would ask exactly why he thinks that would be better than the diet

alone. The diet usually does best without drugs on board to

complicate things. Often, it takes some careful fine tuning of the

diet to attain seizure freedom. It's important to give the diet a

good chance to work on its own. Hopefully, your keto team can help

you make changes, if needed, to adjust the diet to Catie's particular

needs. Sometimes, after trying all options, a small amount of

medication (one that is " more " keto friendly--really none of them are

truly friendly) is added back and seizures improve.

Hope this helps...

Hello,

So much information out here... This group is wonderful! For example, I have

never cooked with pork rinds in my life, but will look for them so we can try

keto chicken nuggets......

Anyhow, I've been reading the comments about Depakene, as our son was

switched to Depakene from Depakote as we initiated his diet in June, 04. Our

neuro

said that Depakote had too many carbs and that Depakene was carb free.

I've been reading so many comments that Depakote/Depakene interfere with the

diet's ability to work anyhow, but now I'm really confused.... We had

discussed a " wean " schedule for Colton's meds and Depakene was the last one we

were

going to address. I'm thinking I should discuss this with our neuro and

hopefully work to reduce/remove the depakene before we address the others

(carbitrol

and keppra). Any thoughts?

~, Colton's mom, on the diet since June, 04.

I understand that Depakene is the worst for interfering with the diet

because it causes an increase in blood acidity. Carbitrol is bad because

it is difficult to wean. It also increases cholesterol (according to

someone here) which tends to increase on the diet too. Keppra, I don't

know about.

Usually you want to reduce or eliminate meds that are making things

worse first.

If you aren't sure, I would think that the depakene would be the best

one to drop because of interference with the diet.
