Perhaps we should all consider visiting our local dietician and bringing them some yummy gifts!!! Work towards raising awareness with them as well as with the local physicians? Last spring, I had a 45 discussion with a doctor who was very curious about our diet. He too thought it would be hard to live without breads and such; I told him that it was not true - I eat bread all the time... just not wheat bread. Then he asked what we used instead, and the talk went on. He was very intrigued by it all and left nodding his head. Cheryl in MNrxp_us@...

i just want to say that I love the idea of a

gluten-free walk through the grocery store. Thank you

for the idea. I'm going to see what I can do right

around home.

Listmates:

A tour store by a dietician or an informed person in the store is

great. In Austin, Texas, the Central Market Stores (specialty stores

in the HEB chain) had Foodies--specialists in food who helped

customers with questions and finding items in the store. In the

Central Market on North Lamar the Foodie handling the gluten-free

products conducted the tours on a regular basis. She prepared a list

of the gluten-free items for the store at regular intervals. Central

Market had a cooking school program and gluten-free classes were

included about every two months. The chef for those classes had a

husband with celiac disease.

The Whole Foods Flagship Store on 6th Street in Austin had a tour for

our support group conducted by the person charged with purchasing

gluten-free products. We had samples and got lots of information.

Tours can be very helpful to celiac folks and the store personnel. A

dietician is great, but not always available if the store does not

have one. I found the tours with non-dietician personnel were

helpful too as they knew the products in the store. As with all

issues related with celiac disease, information exchanges are most

helpful in a promoting a continuing dialogue between the consumer and

the store.

I am *way behind* on my emails.

But I just wanted to say, I LOVE Hannaford! The dietician that works part time with them, also works part time with a medical practice. She is GREAT. I have shopped with her and she has brought in foods that I have asked for. Yes, the organic sections are growing by leaps and bounds.

Actually, mine may be growing more than others, since Whole Foods is coming to Portland soon. And right around the corner, literally. Wild Oats is already right around the corner! They are gearing up for the competition.

Have a gluten free day,

She's been instrumental in expanding their organic sections and including a designated GF area - they have so many GF brands and products now, even Kinnikinnick! It's been a great experience.
