Guest guest
Hi everyone! We started our initiation last monday and just came home friday. We have seen improvements each day in 's seizure control. He is on 4:1. Ketones were in the large 160 range in the hosptial and even most of yesterday. Today they are reading only 40-80. I have re-read my keto manual and done a search in Dr. Freeman's book and can't find what to do if they are dropping. Do I go back to a fast until they drop or just keep feeding the dietician prescribed menus and they should settle back up? Obviously, I will call dietician in the am, but was wondering if there is something I should know to do that I have simply forgotten in all the new stuff I have learned this week! Thanks for any advice! Leigh
Guest guest
Leigh, Welcome to you and , the new " keto kid " . I'm Cammie, mom to , 8rys. old, seizure free on the diet for 14 months now. I'm so happy to hear you are seeing success the first week--that's a great sign. Some teams do recommend that you fast your child for a few meals if ketones drop. Per our dietician, I would just omit the carb portion of 's meal(s) when her ketones dropped. That's less drastic than fasting. Check ketones again before the next meal to see if they are stronger. Hopefully, that will bump the ketones up for now -- do call your dietician on Monday for recommendations. Sometimes it just takes a while for the ketone level to " settle " . Other reasons for temporary low ketones are new foods, too much fluid intake, and fighting an illness (whether the child actually comes down with it or not). Also toothpaste, lotions, etc. can lower ketones if they contain hidden carbs. Hopefully, you received a list of things like this that are " o.k " for keto. Is on any meds? AEDs can negatively affect the diet, too-- some worse than others. Sounds like he's off to a good start, though -- WOOO HOOOO!! Guest guest
--- Hi leigh, it's nicole from EFA website, damon did the same the second week on the diet, he was on a 3.5:1 ratio and moved to a 3.7:1 . Do you have a glucometer? If not I would maybe ask for one, when there keytones are low to mod it can indicate high blood sugar, and they can lower the carbs for you. Damon is on 2.0 grams of carbs a feed and that help but we are increasing to a 4:1 ratio. Also check sabout the glucometer. Also ask yourself if he could have gotten anything, toothpaste or something. Hope all goes better. Guest guest
It is likely that the calories are a bit too high. You will have lots of fine tuning to do. You can cut by 100 calories and see how that goes for a week or two. Keep very accurate records of weight as per Dr. Freeman's book. And of everything else for that matter. Your dietician will be able to help you with it. Bill jacksondoodle2002 wrote: > > Hi everyone! > We started our initiation last monday and just came home friday.
