I can't give a 'blanket answer' but I recently got a new laptop for a

specific project... 3 months later I got a warning the Norton Virus

Protection had expired and yes I did have to pay a fee which entitled me to

get " free " updates for the next year. Luckily mine is a business expense

and the money isn't out of my own pocket. Sounds like your mother's

situation is the same as mine. I, too, didn't realize I'd have to pay to

keep it current... but it doesn't surprise me.

My mom got a new PC from Dell with Norton already installed. She just got a

message alert that her update subscription was running out. Is this not a

free service if you have the program installed on your computer? I am

confused, as is she. Does she have to pay Norton on a yearly subscription

basis?

Nan, I think I paid $4.95 for my renewal fee. Now, luckily for me, my e-mail provider monitors emails and quarantines virus tainted emails off my computer for me to view!

Sounds like she didn't get very long on her subscription. It is usually the first year of updates included and small fee after that. She might be able to call Dell and get a code to get it free for the first year.

Norton used to give one-year free auto updates, but several months ago went to only a 90-day free update. However, the nominal cost, I think less than $5 per year, is a small price to pay for keeping the computer as virus free as possible, in my opinion.

Thanks to everybody for your advice about Norton. My mom has been trying the 800 phone number that appears on the screen and it is ALWAYS busy. I have tried it too. Anybody have another number?

Have either of you tried going online and looking for the update? I used the notice they sent me and downloaded the update from their site.
