Hi Group,

Can someone please tell me if there is any benefit in taking a Zinc

supplement daily? I looked in the archives and couldn't find any specifics

on this. I cannot use ANY topical creams--including Zinco and sunblocks--so

I was wondering if taking this orally would help at all with healing and

protecting my skin. Currently I am taking 50mg per day. Is this a proper

dosage for someone who is kind of small? I feel a little stomach

upset/nauseous when I take it--so that is why I ask about the dosage.

Thanks in advance for any information that can be provided on this subject.

Regards, HT

I used to take zinc supplements and remember my dermatologist saying not to take

more than 20 or 25 mg. daily. Too much zinc suppresses the immune system.

Anybody else hear this?

HT,

I cannot comment on the efficacy of the dosage, but I can

tell you that I was taking 50mg per day and noticed that

over a long period of time (many months), it can be too

much of a good thing! I think a period of taking the zinc,

followed by a period of staying off it, is a good path to

follow. I find when I stay on it for too long, I actually

break out in bumps. Someone else on the list reported this,

and I was so grateful because I never would have linked

it to the zinc.

Also, if you're prone to anemia, an amount of the zinc will bind with

some of the iron in your system. This could lead to anemia if your

system doesn't get enough.

I get fatigued when I take doses larger than 30 mg. I believe this is

an individual thing.

here is webmd info about zinc

http://my.webmd.com/content/asset/uspdi.202622

US recommended amt is 12-15mg although Canada's says 9-12mg.

also excessive amounts interfere with other minerals(I heard about

copper being reduced)

also at web Md:

" ...It is a trace element in the diet, a component of several

enzymes, including DNA and RNA polymerases and carbonic anhydrase. It

is abundant in red meat, shellfish, liver, peas, lentils, beans, and

rice. A well-balanced diet assures adequate intake of zinc. Those who

may suffer from zinc deficiency include persons on a strictly

vegetarian diet and those who are on a high-fiber diet. In the latter

case, the zinc is bound to the fiber and is eliminated in the feces

without having been absorbed through the intestinal wall. Poor

absorption of zinc also can occur in persons with chronic and severe

bowel disease. The recommended daily intake is 12-15 mg for an adult.

A severe deficiency of zinc can retard growth in children, cause a

low sperm count in adult males, and retard wound healing. Signs of a

deficiency include anorexia and a diminished sense of taste. An

excessive intake of zinc can interfere with the body's use of copper

and other trace elements, and produce diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and

other signs of intestinal irritation.
