This page makes it sound a lot like kefir! http://www.dlc.fi/~marianna/gourmet/17_8.htm But if it's kefir, how can it be lactose free? I guess it's not kefir, but something some what similar. I'm TOTALLY curious now. I thought that Hawaiian stuff (poi, I think) was the closest thing to edible snot that existed. Maybe poi and viili are a neck-and-neck tie in the race for " most like snot " . Esther in RI

From this page of cultures for sale, I'm guessing viili is sort of like yogurt, sort of like kefir, but a from a different strain of bacteria altogether: http://www.gemcultures.com/dairy_cultures.htm

And I will be (excuse the pun) dipped in snot if I can find anything velvety OR delicious about it! On the up side, Im not contributing to global warming after eating it. I would not kid you, it makes Poi yummy and palatable. Sigh..... One left for morning and hopefully, that is the end of the viili!Best!CassiGluten free in downtown Imatra! Guest guest
I hope you feel much better soon Cassi. I think I remember my aunt making a concoction like you mention. We are part Finnish and she always called it "filia" and you are right, it looks and tastes kindof like snot/yogurt. she used to make it and let it sit to ferment for days--I don't even remember what she made it out of--but she always insisted it was good for you and tasty (never appealed to me either) A MahoneyWrite 2 the PointJournalist
Guest guest
What is viili supposed to do, is it actually supposed to help you get over symptoms quicker than just waiting it out? For me, I usually just need time to let everything pass ~Amy

Guest guest
Any, Viili is high in nutrition, and easy on the stomach. I went thru the nutrient list and its as follows. per 100g serving (2 per container) 300 calories 70% protien 13mg (37%) calcium 1g carbohydrate There is a host of vitamins and stuff that vary by what fruit is used, but active culture is 3.5 bcfu bifidus 1.4 bcfu lactobacilils lactus 1.2 bcfu lactobacillis planterum So, basicly, its more friendly bacteria to add to my other friendly bacteria to get my tummy to like me again. I am soooo extremely anemic right now, and really dont want to have to get in there for a blast of iron, I guess I will choke down the crap. , your family must be from the western side of Finland, they call it viilia there, (v is a very soft pronounced letter so sounds like fee-lee) Thought I would TRY a GF cookie last night before bed.... BAD mistake! I sure hope this lil missy is happy with the damage she caused my gut. I dont wish her harm, but I sure wish she could spend a day in my body!!! Best! Guest guest
Hey Cassi, I'll have to find out where they were from--I am not sure, but that sounds right..it's so funny that you mentioned viilia, hadn't heard that term in years and it brought back sweet memories of my grandmother, Elvi Dahlbacka--now how is that for a Finnish name?
