Does anyone know of a gluten-free online group for children? My 6

and 8 year olds would love to converse with children experiencing what

they do, with celiac/gluten intolerance. If there isn't one yet,

would anyone here be interested in setting one up?

Thanks,

Rebekah

Hi Rebekah & Lauretta,

The only thing I have come across in my internet searches--from last Feb--was Club Celiac.

http://www.clubceliac.com/clubceliac.htm

I bookmarked the page for future reference since Gabby was only 3.5 years old at that time. It looks like they HAD a yahoo group but that link isn't working anymore. There also seems to be an interactive mailing list & chat areas. Don't know if they are still operating.

Hope you find some e-friends for the kiddos! Laurel

My son is 8 years old. I think he would enjoy talking

with other celiac children. He is the only diagnosed

celiac in his school. Granted, his dad and sister

also have celiac disease, but that's not the same as

other kids his age.

Are you familiar with Danna Korn, author and founder of R.O.C.K. -

Raising Our Celiac Kids, a support group for kids and their

parents...

http://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid=8

I don't have any celiac kids, so I'm not sure exactly what they

offer, but I know that they have an active support group in this

area (Washington DC Metro).

You might also look into Bob and Ruth's Travel Club at:

http://www.bobandruths.com

They host an annual trip to the family Club Med resort in Florida,

so your child could meet other celiac kids there. We're looking

forward to going in a year or two.

Kendra, Good to hear of another only celiac in whole school. So is our 5 yo son. Since my son cannot, I do all his research and such. Right now, I am in the process of fighting for him to get to stay home when he is ill with gluten ingestion as he also has DH and gets sores in his mouth and there is no comfort in school to help him in his misery. He does get to bring his own snacks and lunch from home, though, which is a great help. I try to help him feel special and to stand his ground when in a situation a school or anywhere. Has your son been in the same school all along? Could you tell us more as to how well he does in school with celiac? I know it will take time for our son to learn how to take care, but any thing anyone wants to share will be greatly appreciated. Lauretta

My daughter is 5 yrs. old and, again, is the only celiac in the entire school. She was the only one in a private preschool as well, but there were many other kids with allergies so she "fit in". Now in her public Kindergarten, she is the only one with an allergy so this will be interesting. Already not a big fan of the 'special' class added on Friday afternoons which is a cooking class. Just more work for me. Principal is great, not impressed yet with the teacher.

My son (7 years) has been the only one in his school for 2 years (a private school). My daughter (5 years) is joining him at the same school this year. We're not that impressed, but the kids are very aware of what to avoid, and we go over the list with them at home, trying to guess what they might encounter. Of course, our daughter is much more sensitive than our son (she can't even touch wheat or any gluten), so it will be more difficult. He gets migraines, she throws up - different reactions which isn't so helpful either. And in the kindergarten, they have a weekly party with challah (loaves of bread) - so I'm going to have to be on top of that one - as well as the whole paste vs. glue issue, and the play dough / paper mache days. Let's hope they're more communicative this time than last time.

But, my kids don't see it as being bad, they see it as staying out of pain. We look in bakery windows, and have our own versions of may foods. If they have a pizza party at school, I try to make pizza that week for them (maybe not same day but at least that week). And we always give the teacher plenty of non-perishable treats for both kids.

Danna Korn sometimes contributes to this group.

Danna, how about some info about ROCK for this lady?

Thanks! Also, somewhere in the depths of my

non-filing system, I have info about ROCK. When I

find it, I'll post it here for anyone who is

interested.

LaurettaYes, he's a VERY active, busy little boy. He's currently into Legos, Bionicles, superheroes (of any kind), and he LOVES bread - only now it's gluten-free bread ! (We used to call him the "muffin-man" when he was little.) We are in the Atlanta, GA area, and if your son would like to correspond with ours, email me offline. Rebekah
