Question for the girls

I haven't been feeling well for the past few days, so I decided to go

in to see the doc today. They ran a few tests, did some exams and came

up with something I was't expecting. PID. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

I highly doubt I have an STD (had my annual in May and was thoroughly

tested because it was a new doc and I have been with the same guy for

years), but they ran every test you could think of today.

So I have a few questions for you gals.

I was diagnosed with CD shortly after getting my IUD. I never thought

to ask if it somehow contained gluten. It is the Mirena version, so I

am receiving low dose hormones...I called the company that makes it

today but they are going to get back to me. Doesn't help me right now,

does it?

Are tampons an issue? Those never occured to me, either.

Has anyone else been diagnosed with PID?

They have me on a high dose antibiotic and I have to go back in on

Wednesday morning for a re-check. Sorry for blabbing on, but I'm

really nervous.

Also, my doctor seemed to think that those with auto-immune disorders

(celiac included) seem to get PID more than others without. Has anyone

heard that before?

A very confused celiac,

Hi. This article makes it sound like an IUD in and of itself

can lead to PID. (Assuming I read it correctly.)

Hugs! Hope you feel better VERY SOON!

That's what I read, too. But my best friend (a med intern) said it

would have happened within the first few weeks. I'm not totally

convinced it is PID, just that I'm reacting to something.

Esther, you're the best! You have been so kind both here and other

groups we belong to together.

Carla - My short answer is that you must ingest

gluten for it to do damage. Ingest is the operative

word here. I highly doubt that an IUD could cause

gluten problems.

I used to work gynecology as an RN. From what I remember, an IUD increases your risk of PID. It works by scraping your uterus, so increases your chances of inflammation and infection. Hope you feel better.

I was always under the impression that PID was one of those things that they dx

you with when they couldn't find anything else. Has he suggested doing a

laparoscopy to check for endometriosis? That can cause pain, cramps, lower back

pain, pain during sex and more. I have endo as well. I don't think tampons can

hurt you as far as gluten issues or the IUD because the gluten has to go through

your intestines to hurt you, right? If I am wrong, please, someone let me know!

I know I haven't been much help, but hope you find out your problem soon and are

feeling better!

Has anyoneheard that before?A very confused celiac,Carla I worked for several years as a nursing staff member of a popular infertility/OB/GYN group in our area. Yes, more people with IUD's get PID. I also

personally believe that more gluten intolerant/celiac patients get autoimmune disorders. We treated TONS of patients with endometriosis and various other causes of infertility. Unfortunately, I didn't know then about the prevalence of gluten intolerance. I wish I had ! Maybe dietary intervention could have assisted some of those poor ladies we treated. Rebekah
