Guest guest
My son is 2.6 yrs old and was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 18 months. He has been involved in OT, PT, speech, cranio-sacral, GF/CF, SCD and floortime therapy since the diagnosis. A month ago, my son received an autism waiver slot to start intensive in-home therapy for three years. After spending months researching the different forms of therapy, I decided that floortime would be the best match for my son. However, as I continue to spend time researching, chatting with parents and reading posts from support groups, I am beginning to wonder if my son should be involved in ABA? I am starting to become overwhelmed and I can't help but second guess my decision. I know how crucial early intervention is and I want to be sure that I am doing the right thing. Are there any parents out there who are not involved in ABA? What about parents who strongly recommend ABA? I am a single mom and need all the help and advice I can get. Thanks for all of your support, Dayna Sable (Madison, WI) Proud mom to Ben 2.6 yr (PDD-NOS)
Guest guest
We've been doing ABA for 6 months with our 4 year old daughter and have been so pleased with the results. There is a lot of supporting literature and studies on the effectiveness of ABA for ASD children. Of course if and when you decide on ABA, you'll then want to decide whether you want to do Verbal Behavior or Lovass. I would talk to as many parents as possible and do your homework. How does you 3 year autism waiver work? Has it been granted through the public school board? 20-40 hours of intense ABA is what is usually recommended. Can you do both floortime and ABA? You are so lucky to be starting such a program for your son so early on. Good luck to you. A good book to look for is " Teaching Individual with Developmental Delays " basic intervention techniques by Ivar Lovass. www.differentroadstolearning.com has great ASD resources. ABA or " Floortime " ? My son is 2.6 yrs old and was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 18 months. He has been involved in OT, PT, speech, cranio-sacral, GF/CF, SCD and floortime therapy since the diagnosis.
