I have had my son othis diet for 2 months and am very happy so far, except

one thing continues to frustrate me. Jake is " non-verbal " , but we do hear

words rarely. When we started the diet we were hearing words daily, clear,

intentional words. He was on a hunger strike for 9 days, that's when the

verbal gains were seen. Once he surrendered to the diet, vocab. started to

fade. I was so pleased he was eating, I hoped it would resurface. I have

heard alot about yeast affecting language, also that honey is bad for yeast.

I am wondering what other types of food encourage yeast growth.

Jake is very self limiting and has sensory issues with food. This is what I

am feeding him:

custard(from btvc-modified-- apple/pear sauce to replace honey) ' yogurt-not

as much since I have cut back on honey (3TBSP/day), butternut squash, white

grape juice. and that's it, for now.

Any suggestions on which foods might be encouraging yeast? He was showing

signs of yeast before I cut back honey. We are down to 6 tsp/day and

weaning.

Thank you for any suggestions

It maybe that the yeast are causing the speech delay as you

suspect. In your case I think it is good to cut back on the honey

until you get the yeast under control. The carrot and garlic juice

seems to be very effective at getting yeast under control- But he

may not go for it - it is pretty strong tasting.

Can you use the apple/pears sauce to sweeten the yogurt. The yogurt

should also help fighjt the yeast. You can try dripping the yogurt

(if you aren't already) - that helps remove some of the tarness so

you'll need less sweetener.

Are you using prescription meds to fight yeast? If you try Nystatin

you may need it compounded without sugar.

Hi Sheila,

thanks for answering me. I have checked out the carrot juice recipe, no way

I will be able to get any of that in...too bad. I havent approached our ped.

re my yeast concerns. I dont feel he will take me very seroiusly, or that he

is familiar with the problems yeast can cause. I have had some very negative

experiences with md's. So , no we are not on any meds for yeast. I am trying

to piece this all together myself. And if at all possible, solve it with

dietary intervention. IF it is even the cause at all.

We do drip the yogurt and I have added the apple sauce. He is a tough

customer!! :)

I might try the carrot juice anyways, is it possible to make without a

juicer?

Thanks for your suggestions,

Hi Karla,

I don't think you could make it effectively without a juicer. You

may be able to get one fairly cheaply -Walmart(?)(but the cheaper

you go I expect there'll be more pulp in the juice - which you may

need to strain out at the beginning of the diet while still having

trouble)

Hi Karla,

My parents gave us a juicer and grill for Christmas. It was a combo

pack from Walmart. Both came for the price of one. The juicer is

called (hang on a second...*puff, puff* running back to the

computer... " ) " The Juiceman, professional series, 210 " . It's quick

and cleans up pretty easily.
