Guest guest
OMG, you just made me laugh! A few weeks ago I met a group of girls that I've been friends with on the Internet for 3 yrs. They flew in from all around the country. is from Apple Valley CA. I saw them pull into the hotel so I hid behind a car and when they got out I yelled BOO.. and says.. first thing.. OMG, you sound just like the girl from Fargo!! HA! All I said was BOO! Heysterical! I still listen to my sister in WI and think 'did I used to sound like that???'. My sister in law here, laughs and says 'yes, it was pretty bad!'. LOL. I pick it up right away when I go home and I can't tell you how many people said 'Hey, did you see the movie Fargo????? You sound just like them!'. I think I was asked that at least 3 times a day at work when that movie came out....... Guest guest
A few days back I asked if anyone outside of Wisconsin had ever heard of a " bubbler " . Well, my friend from Chicago has, he knew what a bubble is. We thought of another one, too. A " wash rag " . It sounds so awful, and I never said it, but my nursing school room mate who was from Madison, WI, called that thing made of terrycloth that you usse to wash yourself with a " warsh rag " . Yes, the 'r' was in there! I always called it a " wash cloth " , but the friend from Chicago called it a " wash rag " , no 'r'. One more I remembered. When I was in Milwaukee with my grandson 2 years ago, my cousin said something very funny. Instead of agreeing with me when I made a statements she said " Yeah, hey? " It was like a question, and my grandson and I both noticed it, and we still say " Yeah, hey? " if we want to crack each other up! Guest guest
Are you sure it wasn't 'yeah, eh?'. The eh is pronounced 'AY?' and we used to say that a lot like the canukes do. My mom still says warsh, although we have tried to tell her for years that there is no r in the word! We used wash rags all the time. We also called soda 'pop' and dinner was supper and lunch was dinner. My dad would come out to CA and insist on calling it dinner and supper so we finally had to come to an agreement that while in WI, we would call it his way and in CA we call it our way. When in Rome.....that makes it less confusing! Also, out here, we bbq, back home a bbq was a sandwich that we call a sloppy joe. Back there, when cooking outside, we were grilling out. My husband still makes fun of me every now and then when I say 'doncha know?' or 'eh'. My sister in Minnesota jokes that MN is spelled Minnesooooooootah. Sure sounds like that when she says it! LOL. I still listen to my sister in WI and think 'did I used to sound like that???'. My sister in law here, laughs and says 'yes, it was pretty bad!'. LOL. Guest guest
I grew up in the Chicago area, and I think those are midwestern terms. I vaguely remember bubbler - that's a water fountain, right? Definitely know of wash rag too. What about " singles " referring to one dollar bills? Lots of folks looked at me strange with that one when I ventured out of the midwest. Sue in Denver > > A few days back I asked if anyone outside of Wisconsin had ever > heard of a " bubbler " . Guest guest
They were called "warsh rags" in Cincinnati, too. We did the "warsh" in our "warshing machines". The rag part never surprised me because my mom never bought wash cloths. She always just cut up old bath towels to make them. Could some of this be a German influence? Guest guest
I think you'd be better off going to the Whole Foods in Madison instead. Nothing against the Gluten Free Trading Co. but for as long of a drive as that is, I don't know if it's worth it. I'd be surprised if that store was even 1,000 sq. ft. The whole foods is 55,000 sq. ft. and have a gluten free bakery. I was just at their web site yesterday, very impressive on their knowledge of Celiac. Plus, the Gluten Free Trading Co. ships so you could always shop on line and have it shipped to you, at the price of gas it may not be so bad. Just my 2 cents. BUT for an entirely GF grocery store, wouldn't that be worth it,at least once/month? KATIE B.Happy Summer

Guest guest
My nother My mother also had warsh rags made the same way and she was from Tennesee. She also used the word Q-pon and not coupon, although the dictionary does back up either pronunciacion. Minnich wrote: They were called "warsh rags" in Cincinnati, too. Guest guest
I do miss a good bratwurst! I have to have them with sauerkraut and mustard (my family thinks I am crazy) but the best ones I have ever had are homemade at the local butcher in my home town of Chippewa Falls, WI and of course boiled in Leinenkugel's beer which is brewed in my hometown. I went to high school with the 'baby' of the Leinenkugels. He was of course the 3rd or 4th generation. It is very rare that I can find someone in CA that has ever heard of Leinenkugels let alone can spell it! AND, if I do run into someone, they insist I bring them home a six pack when I visit. Guest guest
I know what a bubbler is...... but then again, I'm from Mn. We wash, not warsh. I agree, it might have been yeah 'eh. I also didn't think we had any accent until we lived in FL for a few years. I am SO glad to be back in the land of "ya sure, you betcha." ) Cheryl in MNrxp_us@... Guest guest
I believe it is 3313 University Avenue. I was in Madison this week but got too tied up at the farmer's market and didn't have time to stop at Whole Foods. Besides, I am dealing with a painful recovery to a root canal and just wasn't in the mood to stick around..but the Whole Foods up there is very nice. I guess we are getting one in Milwaukee soon too! Guest guest
While you are in Madison you definately want to go to C's specialty foods on the west side (formerly the low carb market). The owner Char is VERY knowledgeable and has lots of great GF foods. Most items she will have a open package of so you can sample before you buy. I also highly reccomend the Sami's bread she sells. The best GF bread I have had, and I have tried lots. > > I didn't know there is a Whole Foods in Madison. I'll > be there as well as the other M-City (Milwaukee) in > October.
