OK, i just reread that and i'm not sure i made sense. I'm tired it's been a

really long day. I'll try to pull up the web page tomarrow with the law on it

that talks about what I'm trying to say cause i'm not doing a very good job

of it.

LOL ... Your weekend so far sounds like my last few weeks -- especially the

cat part. Except mine was a hearing 3-year-old who just couldn't believe that

cats/kittens don't want to be put into baby carriages. Which is why I'm

hiding out in my office in my jammies now ... the quiet is just marvelous.

Selena, you did just great explaining it, at least for me it made perfect

sense. Just to be clear for you, I wasn't criticizing your info, just worried

that FAPE may not have the same sharp teeth for preschool that it does for

school age kids. (And the state laws vary so much.) I never had to deal with EI

or transitioning into public schools, which is a blessing and a curse, I

guess. I really wish Ian had been diagnosed earlier. It's have been better for

him

and I'd know more, LOL!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Jill

For an auditory-oral child who has never been in a TC classroom it would

just be too restrictive asking them to use a mode of communication which they

are not accustomed.

Great point! The LRE issue was always a stronger one for us than any other.

I always found it a challenge to turn the arguments being presented around

to fit what Ian's issues really were. Like refusing to answer the exact

content of a question and posing another one that actually was on point and

about

what Ian's issues really were/are. The other thing we did once he was at/above

grade level -- I refused to talk about learning disabilities as the

justification for his services. I would discuss only his physical handicap

(hearing

loss) and the support needed to address that.

When he was first diagnosed, his hearing loss was not severe enough for him

to be admitted into the deaf schools (They start admissions at 50 db loss,

combined with functioning tests like word recognition, etc)

For our Ian, there was the public school and other specialized (and

expensive) private schools. We pushed for the public and appropriate supports.

After

I'd learned to play the game, the private schools were always my hammer with

which to hit them when they balked at maintaining services or wanted to

reduce them -- once he was suddenly getting honor roll level grades. Amazing

what

a little appropriate support can do for a kid, huh?

I got quite the education about the laws of education when fighting for this

kid. Which I thought was funny, since I was a licensed teacher. Almost none

of this stuff was taught in " teacher school. "

And I'd say that waking up with a sore throat earns you at least a quiet cup

of tea and a nap -- after all it's the weekend and dad is home (grin) ...

LOL....I've certainly had a lot of THOSE days! I know that I've written things

one day and they make sense, only to reread them the next and say to myself

" what was I thinking/writing? " .

I read it and it seemed to make sense to me, but then again I'm a very tired

mom to two who has to be on allergy meds that really don't help my state of

mind.

Selena - The very tired mom of 5, who spent her day teaching 3 kids to swim,

giving rides on atvs, cooking hotdogs on campfires, saving kitty cats from a 4

yr old HOH child who doesn't yet understand what that noise is when she picks

the cat up with a choke hold, and listening to a 33 yr old child who is way to

excited over a college football game. I'm going to bed now!!!!!!!!!
