Hi all,

Just to give a little update. My sons constipation has gone from bad to worse. I

went to the ped today. I had to give him 2 enemas 7 hours apart. I have never

felt so bad! Has anyone had to do this? Apparently, he wasn't getting

everything out of his colon so it was becoming distended and what I was giving

him orally was not helping. Has anyone had this happen? How long does it take

to get them regular again?

Carolyn, The name of the prescription med is Glycolax. He was really bloated

one time but the doctor wants me to give him a smaller amount. He feels it's

really important right now to make sure he's regular. I agreed as long as he

doesn't regress. He also said I could use MOM. I'm also doing the same juices,

fruits, etc. I really hope it works.

Amy D.

Re: [ ] Re: constipation help again please!

Amy, what powder prescription medicine (laxative?) caused bloating? Was it

miralax? thanks, Carolyn

Miralax and glycolax are the same I believe. PEG=polyethylene

glycol. Use it to get him regulated and shrink the colon, but keep

up the magnesium and fruit fiber to get him off of it. After 1 1/2

years we are almost off of it.

Sorry to hear about your son's worsening issues. Constipation is

absolutely no fun to deal with. We did have to give Charlotte enemas

about a year ago when we didn't keep up on the other methods we use to

keep her regular. They didn't work at all and we ended up having to

do a bit of manual extraction. That's enough to make sure you keep on

top of things. LOL

I understand the issues about the fiber interfering possibly with how

the omegas work, but my thought is that constipation can actually make

my daughter sick or even send her to the ER whereas not talking will

not. I have to balance all of these issues and make a priority on

which fire to fight first. Since learning about the possible fiber

issues though I do make sure to give Charlotte her omega oil in the

morning where she doesn't have a high fiber meal. This should give

her enough time to get the omegas into her bloodstream before having

a higher fiber lunch or dinner.

It really can take months to a year to get your child's sytem regular

again. Their bowels have to relearn to recognize the signals that

they need to empty and the kids can tend to hold it in as they know it

can hurt more.

Just be assured that you can do it. My daugher simply doesn't have

the typical innervation in her rectum which really makes being regular

very difficult. I wouldn't say she's regular now, but we are able to

keep her bowels moving enough that we don't have to use any

prescription meds. We just have to make sure to really watch her diet

and exercise and stay on top of things.

HI Ann and all,

Thanks so much for the response. My son has been able to go again after the

enemas. What a horrible experience. I feel like I'm in a darned if I do and

darned if I don't. The fiber so far has been the #1 factor in helping him go.

Even more so than the MOM, but I'm using that too. The positive side is he's

finally going. The negative is that he start stuttering yesterday. I increased

his Pro-Efa and am giving him the fiber in the am and the pro-efa at night. I

really hope increasing his Pro-Efa will help his speech while I get through the

crisis of getting him regular. I really feel we were close to an ER visit and I

don't want to be in that position again! Once I can get him going consistently I

think I'll get him off the fiber ASAP!

Thanks again!

Amy

Thank you!! I am planning on doing just that. Getting him off the Glycolax

ASAP but not before I can control it naturally!

Thanks !

He is now responding to treatment but it's taking A LOT to get him regular. I

will definitely ask the GI doc about hirschsprungs when we go. Which we can't

get in until Nov.!!

Thanks again,

Amy D

This may be totally unrelated but my non-apraxic middle child had severe

constipation as an infant that was related to food allergies (gluten, rice

and dairy). Totally regular when offending foods are eliminated, but severe

constipation would return with every attempt at reintroduction of cereals

(ie no bowel movement X 2 weeks, then need enemas).

I've heard great things about a product called oxypowder for

constipation. Take a look at

www.oxypowder.com

If you aren't supplementing with magnesium, you might try that first.

Mag citrate is better absorbed, but mag oxide is more helpful for

constipation.

Hey Amy,

Glad to hear you were able to have some success at getting him

cleaned out. It definitely can be a slow process of achieving

regularity, but you're making a great start. Good luck going

forward.
