Guest guest
Sorry for the delay - my computer broke down and I had to have it serviced!! I strictly followed the diet for about 4 months, then I started adding things without calculating them in. I never " technically " lowered her ratio. She stayed at a 3.1 ratio from the beginning. She was to ketotic at the 4.1 ratio and got extremely sick while in the hospital and lost 6 lbs from her already lanky frame! I would follow her meal plan and tweak it as I saw fit. Three meals with no snacks was so hard with her going to school. The whole class would have a mid-morning snack so I bought Atkins Advantage Bars and cut them into quarters. Each day when the other children had their snack she would eat her portion of the Adv. bar. I did not recalculate the rest of her meals to fit this snack in. She was also starved after school and I would find an appropriate snack for her to have without calculating it in. I did use keto stix twice a day for the whole 2.5 years. Yes, I still pushed the fats, because she would lose weight if I didn't. She drank all her fats in the cocoa recipe that I posted the other day. She didn't like mayo, butter and stuff like that, but was willing to have canola oil added to her whipping cream (which I made into a cocoa drink for her) and she drank this before each meal, stirring as she drank, using a straw to drink and a spoon to stir, three times a day, for 2.5 yrs, because she wanted to get her fats out of the way and enjoy the rest of her meal. She even took this in a thermos for lunchtime at school. You have to keep the total carbs at 20 or lower in order to remain in ketosis, but I found that the longer she was in ketosis, the more we could cheat and not suffer seizure side effects. So maybe some days she had 30 carbs, she would be lighter on the keto stix, but still in ketosis. Because she loved corn and peas, Cleveland Clinic calculated those into her meal plans! I would give her extra meat, but not extra veggies, so that would keep her carbs down. On Fridays, we always got pizza and bbq chicken wings. I would remove the crust from one slice of pizza (pepperoni and s) and she would eat that and then I would wipe the bbq sauce from two chicken wings and she would grin from ear to ear, it was her favorite meal of the week! Now you can buy so many low-carb products right in the grocery store! If we had to do the diet again, I would do only Atkins (but add fats so she wouldn't lose weight!!)Also, she had to go to Cleveland every six months for needle work (blood work) to make sure her body was handling everything okay. I remember the first time I took her to 's and got a bunless, ketchupless cheeseburger for her, she was so happy! There is a lot that can be done, but please like I said before, check with your child's dietician before you do any changes. Let me know if I can be of more help.
