There are many, many apraxic children who have success without

supplements. Some are non-responders, some have never tried them.

Most people on this board have tried supplements, otherwise the

discussions which are quite heavily weighted towards supplements would

not be of interest. There are other message boards which would be

" populated " more by people who have not had success with supplements.

progress with his speech and other issues but it's difficult to tell

is they are due to the fish oils or if it's due to therapy and his

exposure to preschool. I was just curious if anyone out there has

seen improvements in their kids with out the fish oils?

My son is a non-responder. I increased his fish oil from once a day

(4 month period) to three times a day (2 month period) and I thought

maybe he was babbling more but now that he's off the oils (we see

the neurologist next month and also will be getting blood tests so

we want him to be tested for how he is not how he is on fish oil) he

babbles the same if not more!?!

He is irrational on 400mg Vit E (6 week period) in the mornings; I

mean he has weird emotional melt downs that frighten me. (Like he's

having a seizure maybe?) When I broke it down to 200mg in the am and

200mg in the pm he was better. He wasn't quiet before but his

behavior is nerve wracking on Vit E.

My son was also born with hand defects and kidney defects so he

probably is very unlike the other children here. He has other issues.

Gee thanks-obviously I realize that this particular message board is " weighted "

more towards the supplements but since it is an APRAXIA message board (not a

FISH OIL board or a SUPPLEMENT message board) I thought it would probably be

interested in helping all people with apraxic kids-not just those who are sold

entirely on the supplements. I thought it was for sharing, support and

information-looks like I stumbled onto the wrong site if everyone else is like

you.

Hi Sherry:

This board has lots of other good info besides supplements. I have

asked many questions about therapy techniques, constipation is also

an issue, IEP info, etc. My son is on fish oil, but speech therapy

is still very important to help him. There are also a lot of

parents on here with older children. You will find answers about

different stages that apraxic children go through such as

stuttering, or reading as they get older. Ask away, and people will

respond to your questions and offer what worked for them. I hope

this helps you some. It is very frustrating when you don't have all

the answers or know what to expect... As a group though, most will

sympathize with you and offer any advice to help you and your child

go through this process.

Sherry,

I don't think that was saying that this board is not

interested in supporting parents of apraxic kids in ways other than

supplements. I think that she was simply pointing out that you're

not going to get a true representation of how many apraxic kids are

doing well without supplements on this board, because the parents

who tend to stick around here are the ones whose children are

responders. I think she was trying to be encouraging to those

parents who are not seeing results with EFAs. I really don't see

how you're interpreting her words in a negative way. Typically the

parents here are supportive in all of the ways you mentioned, and we

don't see too many posts like yours that seem to be criticizing

another parent who was just trying to be helpful. Emails can very

easily be misinterpreted - maybe I'm reading yours wrong too!

I think I speak for at least most of us when I say that we're glad

you're here and we're here to help with whatever you need!

Sherry

There is a lot of info on this board about supplements but there are

also many posts about therapy techniques, dealing with IEP stuff,

handling different situations with our kids, etc. My daughter does use

supplements but I think there are a lot of families reading posts, etc

that don't. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems there are many parents here

who's children are non-responders and then some families who haven't

gone down the supplement route at all. Sorry you felt like you were

not welcomed here. It seems your question was geared toward a research

kind of curiosity and that is exactly how I think about these things as

well. I think that is how approaches much of this and it is

that same kind of questioning and curiosity that led her to find out

more about vitamin E.

So, this board isn't just about supplements. The posts are " supplement

heavy " sometimes, especially lately. I like it here because I learn

about the supplements but also I learn about new therapy techniques to

try, techniques to avoid, IEP pitfalls and successes, etc. Sorry you

felt like you weren't welcomed here. I hope you stick around.

I sure did not mean to imply that your question was not valid. I

apologize if it came across that way. It's just that, you have to

admit, if your child is a non-responder as mine mostly is ( having

been on EFAS for 4 years and still being seriously apraxic) it is

pretty difficult to read posts here day in and day out about those

who are either seeking or have experienced the " miracle " recovery

using EFAs. Believe me, every one of us wanted it to be true for

our child as it has been for others.

Barely a day goes by that I don't keep up on the postings here, but

a large majority of them simply do not apply to my situation, and it

is frustrating. I have not given up on my child, though, and am

certainly not giving up on the search for what will help him.

the same thing goes for many of us..I tune out the autistic subjects but

that doesn't mean that I stop reading or take in what is relevant for my

child...you have to tune in during the times that is best for you. you

can't please everyone. this site has been very very informative. I give my

son the supplements but I can't say for sure that his progress is

attributed to them. I will not take them off of them to find out...

I've never thought that fish oil produced any big changes in my kids.

I saw big gains on carnaware and essential GSH and methyl B12

injections. I still give fish oil because it's so deficient in most

modern diets and it's good for everyone (plus my kids tested low).

Unfortunately we all just have to keep looking for what works for our

child. There is no " one size fits all " solution since apraxia is not a

simple disorder that has one universally-agreed upon cause.

Hi Sherry,

I think that a bit of everything works to some degree. I think speech and

language therapy in all it's different forms is essential, but it may be that

the addition of supplements makes the therapy more effective. I don't think

supplements on their own would work for a child with severe apraxia, especially

Personally I would not do without the therapy and special education my son

think they are doing any harm at the level he receives. 2 ProEFA in the morning

Hey everyone. I am currently using ProEFA, 2x a day for my 3 yr old

apraxic son (also has sensory issues). We have seen some great

progress with his speech and other issues but it's difficult to tell

is they are due to the fish oils or if it's due to therapy and his

exposure to preschool. I was just curious if anyone out there has

seen improvements in their kids with out the fish oils?

Hi Sherry

I have had to take my son off supplements as he was becoming very

very emotional, to the point where I found a note written by him in

his school desk " I got no fens. " He is 6yrs old. He still doesn't

have any close " fens " but he is happier, maybe less aware of his

loneliness. I do know that supplements really helped him with his

school work and became much better with organizing himself. I am

devastated by this and trying to explore other options to help him.

I love reading the emails on the site because someone might be able

to offer other alternatives.

hi loreta,

my son would get bloody noses from the pro-efa. someone suggested that fish oil

sometimes thins blood so maybe that is why he had bloody noses. sooo I am now

thinking of going to other nutritional supplements with a doctors approval. i

acually have a soon to be cousin in law who went to school for this and may

contact her. also my son's body doesn't process a broken down form of b12 and

folinic acid. we found that with a blood test. the shots were very expensive

and was very emotional on those too. so i am trying to find out what else i can

do.... i hear ya, i was very disappointed too that he could not take the

pro-efa.

Thanks for your response. That's why I asked-just to get other parent's

opinions and experiences-responders and non-responders alike.

debjward <debjward@...> wrote: My son is a non-responder. I

increased his fish oil from once a day

Thanks so much for your response. I was merely asking for more info, opinions

and experiences. Not sure what prompted 's response....

But anyway, no, I have felt very warmly welcomed and have had a very good

experience with all other posts. Thanks!
