Guest guest
Did I not read somewhere on here once that sometimes the thresholds can change during puberty? Jake seems to be saying what more and is at that point but he has a CI. I am wondering if it is that he needs a remap or something else. All his equipment checks to work fine. His map has been essentially unchanged for the last 5 years so it seems odd to me that it may all of the sudden just need changing. Guest guest
Hi Elaine - I've not read it but certainly we saw Tom's hearing change a couple of years ago. It was interesting that his actual audiogram didn't change overmuch but his word recognition scores plummeted to 4% (from 50%). That's why he then had his implant surgery. Guest guest
Thanks girl! It is weird, the other night he said MOM, YOU NEED TO COME HERE SO I CAN SEE YOUR MOUTH. I was thinking now that is odd because he hears fine on the audiogram and had never done that. He is in school without a transliterator this year and went from a self contained to mainstream in all classes instead of a few so I think he is doing okay at school. But to ask that at home was weird. Elaine
Guest guest
Hi Elaine, Our audiologist warned us to look for hearing changes with puberty. We have had two fluctuations, one a few years before puberty and one only a few months before. Both times most but not all of the hearing came back. So I'm not sure this was puberty related but really don't know what it was.
Guest guest
Our oldest ds's audiogram has been stable for several years, but we had to have his hearing turned up this last year (he just turned 14.) Audiogram or not, they just weren't cutting it. This DS hates any changes to his hearing aids, so it wasn't pleasant at first, but such a relief after he got used to them. > Did I not read somewhere on here once that sometimes the thresholds can > change during puberty? Guest guest
It's interesting, , that my oldest DS' audiogram didn't change either - but his word recognition scores were in the toilet! This morning he asked me about getting a bilateral implant - I know our insurance covers that now thanks to Let Them Hear so we're going to look into it. He said he's getting no gain at all any longer from his hearing aid... Guest guest
When JD's hearing loss was first diagnosed 18 years ago, I was told that if he was going to lose more hearing, it would happen at puberty. -Kay Kay kay@... Guest guest
And I think we both have another son approaching this age. >I always figure that *everything* changes during puberty - why not > hearing too?! > > Listen Up! wrote: >> When JD's hearing loss was first diagnosed 18 years ago, I was told that >> if >> he was going to lose more hearing, it would happen at puberty. >> >
Guest guest
Yeah - and the younger one is much more intense. Should be fun! Sam is 11 - 12 in October. I have such a hard time seeing him as the tortured, moody teen but I know it will happen! He has a new FM system (the Phonak SmartLink) and new boot for his implant and he LOVES it! He said it's so much clearer. I'm feeling good about that... Night! Guest guest
I feel for you guys. I have a 13 yr old " supposedly hearing " child that is going to be 14 in October. He is also bipolar..yikes----- and Jake is 12 going on 13 in January. There is way too much testosterone around here at the moment. Jake is at that stage where he thinks since he is almost 13 he can talk back and be sassy. His favorite excuse for not doing what he is told..... " Well, I am deaf--you know? " Help me help me....... Guest guest
My son will be 12 in October, too. :-) We also have a 15yo daughter who hit puberty at the ripe age of 10. It's been a very bumpy ride, but she finally seems to be out-growing it. With any luck, she'll be through it before DS gets into it. Guest guest
I have two now, the 15 year old girl is pretty good, we have our moments but overall we still laugh together a lot and it is exciting to be able to relate to her in a more mature way. But the 12 year old boy...this is different. He is moody with anger...shuts down in anger, and goes into his own little testosterone world. He's also teasing a lot now where he never did that before. He is so male, it is scary. I keep picturing his wife many years from now and how frustrated she'll be that he won't want to talk. Or doesn't know how. No wonder I think Bobby is so cute at 6! Trish My son will be 12 in October, too. :-) We also have a 15yo daughter who hit puberty at the ripe age of 10. It's been a very bumpy ride, but she finally seems to be out-growing it. Guest guest
His birthday is on the 7th, and he just started 6th grade, after six years at the same elementary school. He seems to be doing well so far. Kiminy is an online nick I use for chats, etc. In Real Life, I go by Kim. Guest guest
Sam's b-day is the 5th - he too just started 6th grade after six years in the same elementary school. Fortunately, his older " trailer blazer " brother is there now too so it's been somewhat easier for Sam. Guest guest
just started the 6th grade...turned 12 on the 27th...Quite the ‘older child’ now...complete with a perm in her hair on the 26th and wearing makeup (minimal – I try to wipe off most of it before she gets out the door)...She has changed I tell you...Suddenly maturing...doing her homework and not complaining too much...Even went to try out for a community play yesterday (on her own mind you with no ‘pushing’ from us). I called the director of the play to see what it was going to entail...practice etc...I warned her that could be quite the ‘drama queen’...she said, “oh that’s fine...we like drama queens.” Then I told her that also wore hearing aides...she said, “Oh that’s fine, so do I”.... Needless to say, puberty is maybe not that bad? (I’ll probably regret saying that :-)) I’ve been through it with her two older hearing sisters...one started college a couple weeks ago (that is scary) and the other is a sophomore in HS... Guest guest
I feel for you, my middle child hit puberty at 10 and she still acts like a snotty 13 year old most of the time - and she's 20!! Maggie and my older daughter hit puberty at 13 and both were/are much easier to get along with. Puberty too soon is punishment!!
