Hello all!!!

I just got back from a 3 day 2 night stay in the hospital with my son Lucas.

He had tubes put in for the 3rd time, had his huge, infected tonsils taken out

and had his adnoids removed again. They did an ABR test on him and did noitce

that there is some hearing loss but will not have the definate test results

unitl next week. We are hoping that this will improve his speech!!! He was

diagnosed with receptive/expressive disorder a few months ago. He can follow

commands and can make sentences but is sometimes unintelligible. The only

problem is that he sometimes does aviod eye contact. Perhaps he feels

embarassed that he is sooooo far behind and he just doesn't want to look at

people. I am not sure. I know he never had the eye contact thing until

lately. For the most part he is a normal boy who loves to play with kids after

he warms up.

I love when poeple ask him " do you have any brothers or sisters?' and he can

not answere because he does not understand them or even know how to reply!!!!

Then poeple stare at me and him and think that he is weird or something.

Do any of you have any encouraging stories for me !!! I am at an all time low

and just need some help. VERY depressed!!!!!

Jill

I am glad you and your son are home from the hospital! My youngest

has had 2 surgeries but they were both out-patient. I hope he feels

better soon.

You didn't say how old your son is. My youngest just turned 3. At a

restaurant yesterday the waitress spoke to my son and my husband who

was sitting next to him answered for my son. My other children were

generally shy around others until they were about 4 1/2. In fact at

the tiny restaurant my husband, my youngest, and me were sitting in

one booth and my oldest three children were at a booth across from

us. They were both nervous and excited to sit *alone* and give their

orders by themselves! (They remembered to say " please " and " thank

you " without being reminded! LOL!)

Sincerely,

Debra

Hi Jill and Debra,

I agree that some children can be shy around others, especially when

they are asked to talk when they can't do that too well yet. In

addition Jill your child has the issue of a possible mild hearing

loss from all the ear infections on top of his speech impairment.

My nephew is/was just like that and he is mainstreamed in

school and has been since kindergarten. For preschool he did attend

the same school as my son Tanner, The Summit Speech School for the

Hearing Impaired and Deaf in New Providence NJ. has lots of

friends and extra curricular activities...but he does wear hearing

aids. And those hearing aids to this day secure him tons of

expensive services through his public school. It's very

impressive. (sad for our group -but impressive on the advocacy of

the parents of the hearing impaired population what they have

accomplished in the past few decades) And don't feel guilt in any

way about all the ear infections. My sister in law is a researcher

for and who works hand in hand with all kinds of

doctors and my brother is a senior partner at a Maritime Law Firm on

Wall Street and very particular about which professionals work with

his children. In spite of all their work, time and money and in

spite of tubes and all the other things you are going through -

lost part of his hearing in both ears from so many ear

infections.

To me the best news about having a speech impaired child who also

may have mild hearing loss from ear infections is the fact that he

is now qualified for the services offered to the hearing

impaired/deaf community -which BTW blows away all the problems of

having to advocate like we do when our children are " just " speech

impaired. You can check out the oral deaf schools for the hearing

impaired in your area, especially if your child is still in

preschool since I know they all cover those years

http://www.oraldeafed.org/schools/index.html

Statistically those that attend the schools for the hearing impaired

have way better majority odds of being mainstreamed in regular

school, graduating from HS, going on to college. There is far less

discrimination and much more compassion in our society to someone

with a speech impairment when it's co-existing with a hearing

impairment. In fact the average Joe on the street will think your

child is talking " good for a deaf person " (!!) once they see the

hearing aids if it ends up he has to wear them like my nephew does.

can hear without his hearing aids when he doesn't have an ear

infection, but not every sound. If he has an ear infection however

which he still gets -he's almost deaf -you can stand in back of him

and scream and he can't hear you.

saving the best for last is doing great in school.

And you want another bright spot, I joked with all of you here years

ago and joke with Tanner now that if he's ever discriminated against

because of the way he speaks as he gets older -I'll buy him some

mock hearing aids he can stick in his ears so then his speech will

be viewed as great.
